Talking Active Autowerke Midpipe Selection Explained

Active Autowerke keeps updating its catalog, which has led to so many midpipe designs. While more options are a good thing, and im glad they keep improving this platform, it has reached a point where it can be confusing. I'm not saying this isn't good; I'm happy to see them pushing the boundaries. But it's time for a dedicated thread to clarify the differences.

Let's start first with the original designs.

The single midpipe. It is offered as a straight pipe or resonated. This midpipe offers the cleanest tone with a deep midrange sound and zero rasp or drone

The equal length. This midpipe sound is not as clean as the single but much more aggressive with a deep midrange sound and aggressive high RPM tone. But it comes with some rasp

Gen 1 was released as a straight pipe with an excellent sound, but one drawback was the cold start (it had a metallic sound to it) and the added rasp on high RPM.

Gen 2 is released as a resonated version of Gen 1 to keep the pros of the equal length but minimize the cons.

Gen 2 with the added resonator is the same as the regular Gen 2 but adds another resonator to the midpipe to lower the tone even more and eliminate the unwanted noise.

Please note that Gen 1 and Gen 2 are available for purchase. At this time, Active Autowerke has not discontinued any of its midpipe options.

You will also notice a listing that says equal length upgrade; this listing is for customers with equal length Gen 1 and want to upgrade to the Gen 2. If you are on stock midpipe, please do not select this listing, thinking you will get the entire Gen 2 midpipe for a fraction of the price. Instead, you will receive only the parts needed for the Gen 1 upgrade.

Gen 1

Gen 2

mike@x-ph.com I think the photo for the Gen 2 is the wrong one?

I actually spoke with Active last week about this as I got curious, they said the upgrade program consists of shipping out a Gen 2, buyer then returns the old Gen 1 back to Active.
I believe they re-fabricate these returned Gen 1's into Gen 2's to use within the exchange program, so you may very well get a recycled Gen 2 if you order through the exchange program, depending on their inventory.

Also, they said resonators placed before the X-pipe section of the midpipe apparently is what resolved the 2K rasp, which was apparent in many DCT F8X (I have manual so never had this issue).

My main issue was coldstart, as I saw their G8X videos with coldstart significantly tamed with the gen 2, but they did not have enough comparison for the F8X yet.

You are probably correct, im using all I got from Active, im still waiting on them to provide new pictures.

adding more resonators will tame the sound especially on cold start, i expect the results of the F8x to be the same as the G8x platform.

I posted this back in May when I had some back and forth dialogue with AA. This post has the pic of new midpipe with resonators built in…

How do I upgrade my Gen1 EL Midpipe? I went onto the X-PH website but didn’t see only the upgrade. What’s the cost, after you get the deposit back, to do the upgrade?

Active Autowerke is revising its listing for the upgrade, so we removed it from the website. if you got the Gen 1 from us, please contact support@x-ph.com, and we will quote you for the upgrade

If you got it from somewhere else, please get in touch with Active Autowerke directly.

So what exactly is the difference between the Gen 1 non-resonated and the Gen 2 non-res?

I wanna keep stock DP & box but I'm trying to decide between res and non-res

The difference is that the Gen2 comes with smaller resonators welded inline further toward the turbos on on the mid-pipe, and has the option for resonated or unresonated link pipes to the back box. The Gen1 is unresonated up to the link pipes and comes either unresonated or resonated.

The claim is that the new Gen2 with the smalle resonators much further forward help reduce the 2K RPM raspiness that the S55 tends to have.

That’s what I’ve read thus far…

Active just informed us that all upgrades must be done directly through them

My mid pipe looks exactly like MSH_ pic. I cut my x-pipe after the hanger and had the AA resonated connecting pipes Tig welded on. AA ball flange clamps and torca still kinda suck. I reused the Dinan torca clamps.

So far, in efficient mode, pretty quiet, a little deeper and more refined on sport/sport+. Note that I have burbles off. No 2k rasp or at cold start. There was still the 2k drone if you keep the flaps opened. I ended up keeping mine on auto. Will report back after some more driving.

Shoutout to @spoolinphil. Check him out on ig. Not many shops I can trust handing my car to and having 100% faith it gets done right. 🙂

I actually love the rasp from the s55 so I'll plan on getting the gen 1 resonated im assuming since it was mentioned i believe the gen 2 has no more rasp and a deeper tone correct?
