That and the M2 already weighs less and they didn't need to go to exotic extremes to reduce the weight further.
It's 80 pounds lighter. Only because the car is physically smaller not because they tried to pursue lightness.

There's a whole lotta " opportunity cost missed" .. In your words.

BMW has reviewed the option to add a CF roof (as a no cost option for the customer) AND as an Optional add on for the customer that wants it.. AND as an optional feature to further move the M2 from it's other 2 series siblings).

As I stated previously ... they are aware of ALL THREE of these paths and yet they chose NONE OF THE ABOVE.
So.... again.. It's in the ///Marketing plan ... which basically states..

Don't like the M2 as it is now ? - F*ck off and buy an M3 or M4. Or... Step down to an M235/240.
Don't want to WAIT for an M2? - F*ck off and buy an M3 or M4. Or... Step down to an M235/240

BMW would rather that customers take the *opportunity * to buy an M3 or M4 if a carbon fiber roof ( or any of the above listed items ) is so important to that customer.

With the current marketing plan . BMW has recognized the opportunity for a lot more profit by having the customer buy a product that has a higher profit margin if the customer is so hung up on a single feature like the carbon fiber roof.

They would REALLY love for buyers to add INDIVIDUAL color along with a whole host of profit laden options like extended leather to their M3 or M4 as well..
This isn't some elaborate scheme by BMW, its simple economics. Every single build variation costs exponentially more to produce, and they have to keep 10 years of parts for by law. Every variation also vastly increases build complexity and risk of defects in production. This is expensive on a whole host of levels (I work for a car mfg). Each variation will be desired by an ever shrinking pool of buyers, so profitability goes down the more you offer as the number of buyers keeps reducing. Every MFG wants to limit their build variation as much as the market will bear - thats why there are all those stupid option packages instead of ala-carte. Now in some cases, a niche volume builder allows lots of customization, but BMW is a volume brand. Having very few options will result in higher overall quality for the rest of us. Its equipt pretty well and the less options the better for me anyway. The M2 will appeal to a very small pool to start with (of people would will actually buy it instead of just talking about it), so further fragmentation doesn't help them at all. Once the initial hysteria dies off, they won't ever be selling these like Camrys because those that want them will buy them early then it will slow down to a trickle - thats why cars like this generally aren't offered indefinately; sales just won't justify it. Seems to me they are doing this very rationally.... drive interest, satisfy that and the leftovers can get pushed up or down to volume products. Good strategy.... Worked on me years ago.. .Beetle came out and I wanted one, and finally walked out with an Audi instead. 4 Audis and a Toureg later I finally got a bug lol - will be going from that to an M2. Got me tickets for the German tour next spring.... If a car doesn't come through by the time I go, I can always pick up a RS3 or S5 .

It sure looks good, but halarious for you guys to gush about a 5kg weight savings on a car that's like 600lb overweight. What's that like .002% of the weight of the car? Lot more bang for your buck elsewhere. Poser item masquerading as performance part seems to me, but plenty of posers, and it does look nice..

That's exactly the way that Acura entered the US market. When I bought my Integra in 1987, there were 2.5 trim levels and 4 colors. You could add air conditioning if you wanted and floor mats. They also built very high quality cars for a reasonable amount of money. A few years earlier than that, I remember shopping for a car with my mother across Ford and Chevrolet. Their option lists were like phone books and the quality was not *quite* as high...

Let's be real...weight savings is almost a non issue, we like it because it's so damn sexy.

You guys are telling me the M2 does not come with the optional carbon fiber roof, you got to be kidding me for the price. I hate sunroofs! It needs M mirrors and M specific quality seats. And the carbon fiber roof needs to have mounts/brackets for putting a Thule rack on it.

LOL! This is even cheaper so you'd have some cash left over for the RKP lip/diffuser!

Looks great. Glad I don't own an M2

To those worrying...whole cars are glued together. This is not paper glue. This is industrial strength stuff that will glue a tank to a 747.

In fact, it is the same glue that BMW uses on all the other carbon roofs. IND did the CF roof on my E90 and after seeing the process, there is no way that this is a structural issue on the car.

Ilia, thanks for the temptation here. The question is, LBB or AW?

Now add these clever 'M4' style headlight masks, to complete the Mini M4 look.

Had IND's CF roof on my 1M. The quality is as good as OEM and so is the fit and finish. After professional installation it looked like it came from the factory! :thump:

Will definitely do it again on the M2 if I ever get one.
That's good to hear since it's been a while since it was installed. I've considered one for my E90 as well, but longevity/yellowing is a concern for me. Thanks for sharing.

On a side note, paint those roof rails black like the factory would have. It ruins the lines from from to back!

No it is he basic removal of the roof skin
I'm sure it's some bolts and a bunch of sealer
Windows have to be removed along w headliner
Any certified shop can do it with 100% job

Reading my mind. I don't really care for M2 in AW (love that color on other cars but not M2). However, CF roof helps!

Why???

Want an M4, buy an M4.

M2 looks amazing as is and IMHO, much nicer than the M4 because it doesn't look like stretched taffy.
