Welcome and enjoy your RWD rocket! Must have been tough to part with the Golf R. I read that it's a great car too!

Nice! I made the exact same transition as of a couple weeks ago. The R is a great car but it lacks a lot of the character and excitement of the M2.

Welcome! Golf R is nice, but M2 is a more serious driver's car.

Welcome! I made a similar switch from a DSG MK7 to a 6MT OG in July earlier this year! As the above posts have mentioned, the R is a great all round car but is pretty sterile compared to the M2!

I currently daily a Focus RS, but am debating the switch to an M2. Sounds like a lot of people in this thread have made a similar transition.

Came from similar path. Sold my '13 R to save for an M2, bought an '89 Land Cruiser that enabled to save. Now I have the TLC for winter duty and M2 for fun days.

Very happy with my path. M2 provides a more analog driving experience once all the grannies are disabled .. wife wouldn't let me own two old cars otherwise I would've found an 80's Porsche turbo to enjoy.

Similar move here. Went from Audi S3 (same as Golf R) to M2. I love the straight line acceleration of a tuned S3/Golf R but the M2 is a complete car. Congrats!!!!

I think I'm going to be the only one moving from an M2c to a Golf R.

Mainly because we have a 2nd kid on the way and I just couldn't fathom having to use a rear facing car seat the odd times I have to take both kids.

I'm hoping the transition won't be so disheartening as I've been using rwd vehicles as my main car for past 20 years.

Similar here. Truck totaled 17 S3 in April. Got a CPO 17 M4C DCT that my wife promptly took for a swim 3 weeks ago and totaled it! YMB with CCBs, I’m still crying! Old man once advised me that getting a new car was far cheaper than a new wife, so on Sunday I received 2021 M2C 6sp LBB. I can honestly say that the rear wheel drive makes a huge difference in making them real track cars. I have not tracked the M2, but did go with the M4 and S3. No comparisons can be made as far as a track car, the Audi is not even in the ball park! It was very fast with a JB4, but the handling and breaking is a different ball game. Can’t wait until the 1200 miles to take the M2C to the track!

What about getting an M340i instead? More room for car seats than Golf R and you get to stay with the BMW brand.

I did test drive the m340i when I was looking for the M2c.

The vehicle is quite fast but having owned few M3s and M cars prior to, I felt like I wouldn't be happy with it in the long run. Plus after having the M2c I'm quite smitten with driving a small wheelbase vehicle.

Also we have access to Model S that is similar to current m340i in size and speed.

So I'm considering the exact same move - going from an '18 Golf R to an M2C. Wondering how you feel about it now with respect to the following:

For those of you that have done it, how much do you miss:

1) Tech - like fancy Digital Dash and Nav, auto cruise, blind spot, comfort access, etc.

2) 4 Doors - I don't have more than 2 people very often but still like to throw my laptop bag or groceries or takeout in the backseat

3) AWD - live in Richmond Va so snow isn't a big thing here, maybe 1 or 2 real snow events per year, but there is a peace of mind factor

Thanks!

I can't say I'm surprised to see how many MK7 to M2 owners there are. I picked up my M2 this week and have a modded MK7 GTI as well. I also had a similar combo 9 years ago (MKV R32 and 1M).

1) I don't have the digital dash so cannot comment, but I find the new BMW navigation and infotainment to be superior to the VW stuff. The OTA updates and such make a big difference, I was with a buddy recently in a MK7.5 R and tried to use the nav POIs and it took us to a place that had permanently closed years before. BMW's comfort access operates the exact same (although on 4 doors it works on rear doors too unlike VW). I personally do not like the adaptive cruise control so that doesn't mean much to me.

2) I long preferred two doors and would throw stuff over my shoulder to the back seat. Now I have an 11 month old and 4 doors makes a huge difference for that. The rear seat space of the M2 is pretty impressive, even for adults and kids in front facing seats. My daughters gigantic car seat actually fits in the M2 and my wife can sit fine in front of it (about 5'3"). The only downside to that is in order to strap my daughter in I have to go from the driver's side, get my whole body in the back while holding her then place her in the seat. Certainly doable but not something I'd want to do 2+ times a day, every day. Outside of putting a kid in a car seat the back seat of an M2 is more than adequate.

3) I live in CT and to me tires are a bigger factor than drivetrain. I drove through snowstorms in the 1M on winters, up to VT and never once got stuck or even felt uncomfortable. I have snows on my GTI now and feel better in that than the X3 on all seasons. Living in VA is probably a little different as you don't get enough snow to justify snow tires so maybe a winter/cold weather set of good all seasons like DWS and you would be fine.

Hope this was helpful.

Why not use forward facing child seats?

We can't use front facing for infants here in Canada. Mostly due to the fact that it's just not as safe so even if it was an option, I wouldn't try it.
