Alpine White Reveries : Team Schirmer M2 GT

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Hello! My name is Dom and some of you may recognize may or may not know me from my last build. I had a 2012 M3 Competition and it was definitely a car that I enjoyed building, driving and owning. For reference, here is my old thread and pics.

I didn’t do a great job of build journal for every mod or picture every step of my progress. I guess I just love to wrench and once I get a part, I just get to work. It’s definitely something I've found therapeutic over the years and I’m excited for what is to come on my new journey. After I sold it in October 2019, I took a bit of time to figure out my next step and what I really wanted.

Alpine White Dreams

Come February, I had the urge to build another car, initially I wanted an 05-06 E46 M3 Comp 6MT white on black or cinnamon. The one I desired had to have extremely low miles and in mint condition for its age. It was proving to be nearly impossible, only ones that I could find were random ones that popped up on BaT and EAG. I found a few options, I just couldn’t bring myself to buying an old car for that kind of money especially when I knew I was going to build it the way I wanted to. In the midst of searching for the perfect e46, I ended up straying over to the M2C as I started to realize how it checked off all the boxes for me. It has the power and torque (S65 lacked torque), new updated technology, and its looks phenomenal. Most of all this car has so much potential and I instantly had a vision for the car.

Then after some research I fell in love with the M2C more and more. I watched a ton of YouTube videos, had discussions with friends and fellow enthusiasts; ultimately confirming this was the right fit for me. Now it was time to decide on which one to go with, Initially I was going to try something different Black Sapphire w/Orange stitch and DCT. Then I thought better and knew myself well enough that I'd regret going black in Atlanta when pollen season hits and well the relentless battle to keep it clean. SO with extreme excitement I went with Alpine White w/Blue stitch, exec, slick top and 6MT. Didn’t have to build one to spec and wait a long time as it was sitting at the port. I got a great deal and it was delivered to my house during lock down, pretty much the smoothest dealership interaction I've ever had.

I took delivery on my M2C on April 14th and even before then, as I mentioned, I had vision of what I wanted to do right off the bat. Parts were ordered and my spreadsheet had been created. I'll do my best to update this thread as I progress, I do post updates and share content on my IG regularly, if you are interested in following, click the image in my signature and give me a follow. I do love to share ideas and help people out where I can. I don't know everything there is to know but I definitely have a fair bit of experience doing something I love. With every build, I learn and grow, just happy to enjoy the ride!

Here are a few pics of in pure stock form.

Judging by how good and tasteful your e92 m3 was, I have no doubts your M2C will be another step up!

How would you describe the power delivery between your Harrop SC and M2C?

Appreciate this, it will take time sourcing the right parts and I'm trying to be as patient as I can. I think Covid has made me want to rush the process and do everything as fast as I can haha.

I hope to answer that question soon. I'm currently at 650 miles, so far so good though. The part I miss about the Harrop is that INSTANT linear power and the pure joy it put on my face listening to it whine. It was menacing for sure!

I think the car needs a front lip and some BBS.

Follow you on insta... loved your E92 build so I'm sure this will also be tasteful and epic. Part of me wants to trade up from my OG M2 to a M2C.

I think you should. I'm so impressed by the M2C and it's potential. There's so much noise about how bad the S55 sounds but I guess I don't care enough to say it's not a worthy upgrade.

I went from a 6mt E92 M3 to a DCT F80 back in 2015 and I just did not connect with the F80 like I did with the E92. The DCT + downgrade in sound just left me unfulfiled with that car; granted the S55 was a beast, especially tuned.

Now that companies are coming out with EL exhaust solutions that make the S55 sound a lot better, my interest in an S55-powered car has been reinvigorated. I love the size of the M2 so we'll see... I'm like you though, since my M2 is AW I was wondering if I'd go BSM w/ Orange stitch with a Comp but I hate washing my car so it would never look clean.

Excited to see your progress

Hey Hey Hey Fellow Previous E9x M3 & Harrop SC owner!

At times I do miss that whine of the Harrop because there is nothing quite like it. The M2C is a great platform and it's the only car that I've driven in the last 7-8 years that I thought is the perfect replacement for the E9x M3.

I saw that you are speaking to MFactory/YCW about the CF DS, and you should also check out the YCW suspension. I've been with them and it's superb for the price.

Cheers,
Sunny

Hey Sunny!

How similar we are in our choices, I didn't realize you got an M2C until I found your thread a bit ago. Glad to hear that you like the M2C and it reaffirms my decision.

I want to get this CF DS going for sure, one of my favorite mods on my M3. I'll check out the YCW coilovers, however MCS 2WNR is what I chose this time around! I love them.

You want in on the group buy?

I am quite close with MFactory/YCW since the owner has been stuck in HK due to COVID-19. I helped them out in terms of development for the suspension. I'm not in your GB, but it's likely that I'll end up having one

As I mentioned before I had a vision for what I wanted to do and of course the mod purchases began. I actually bought a few things before I even had the deal for the car finalized.

After driving a little bit, it was clear to me that the stock strut/springs were complete shit. The ride quality (subjective) daily driving was jarring and overall not great. Compared to my e92 M3 Comp in stock form, this to me was definitely something that had to go.

Initially I was going to try out Ohlins R&T but knew that MCS has always been something I was after to try out based off their reputation, feedback and that they are local to me. This MCS 2WNR had about 1k after it's rebuild service so basically new dampers so I said why not?! Also, from research I can convert these to 2-WR if I choose so, I found this kit to be of great value now and down the road. Found a deal of a fellow member parting with his kit that included everything needed to plug and play, timing was just right...OR I may scour the forums like a mad man hourly lol. The kit came with:
  • 2WNR Dampers
  • Eibach Springs (2.25" 650lb 6"/900lb 8")
  • Ground Control Camber Plates
  • Ground Control Weight Jack Adapters
  • Ground Control Adjustable Front End Links
  • Rear Clevis mounts
  • Damper Sleeves
After seeking some feedback from a few friends and chatting with Wyatt at MCS, I opted to make a couple of slight changes. I ended up going with slightly less aggressive spring rates and added a helper spring for the front.
  • Eibach Springs (2.25" 500lb 6"/800lb 6")
This would provide me with softer rates for a smoother ride that what came with the kit and the 6" spring in the rear to achieve a lower ride height. With that said, all of the stock suspension came out at 181 miles, it was probably the easier install i've done in a long time. Upon install, I set the ride height and dropped it to the ground for the first time and haven't even made a single adjustment yet. Ride height is perfect until I get my new wheel setup.

As for the MCS 2WNR Rebound and Compression settings, I've opted to keep them at their default recommendation. I think once I have added more components and get through break-in, I'll work on dialing these settings in more.
  • Compression - 4
  • Rebound - 8
A few pics of the gear I thought to take before I put em on. Like I said in my OP, its something I'm trying to do better on, documenting w/photos and updates!
