Lost my key

Dealer wants to charge $380 and wasn't sure if any additional coding would be necessary beyond that (only talked to the parts guy).

Anyone know a more affordable way to do this?

You can only get a key from a dealer and they need to program it for your car. No other option.

$380 is actually a good price for an OEM replacement. Normally they go for like $500.

No coding required AFAIK, the new key will come with pre programmed for your car.

Check to make sure you don't have the key protection on the car. I declined mine, but the dealer comped the first year anyway.

Thanks all. You'd think with a device this expensive they would have some type of tracking or app that could show you the keys last location.

So they do that with just the VIN number, correct?

I lost one in the snow earlier this year.

I now lock the key in my trunk and unlock the car with my iPhone.

Yeah I'd imagine they have every vin and key matched together in their system so they know whose key goes along with what transponder code.

Wow. That's ridiculous.

I will definitely continue to cover the VIN on my dash.

You'd have to provide proof of ownership and many more personal details about yourself confirming your identity and all that before they'd just put in the order and give you a car key. It's not like anyone can just write your vin down, get your key made and steal your car. This has been thought of already and measures are in place to prevent that from happening. No need to be that paranoid.

If no other key is needed to enter the new one into the system, it's hackable.

Good to know... Thanks!

There is absolutely no need for them to get their hands on your keys or VIN. They can literally just find a nice car outside of a coffee shop and wait for the owner to come out to unlock their car. Then they'll use a device that acts as a signal repeater/relay which clones the key signal. Then they can follow you to your home or office, write down where you live and come back while you're at work or sleeping and just hop right in without setting an alarm off or breaking a window. I've seen plenty of security footage of people having this happen to them.

380 isn't terrible actually. My wife lost the key fob for her Nissan Murano about 10 years ago , just a regular fob with a key no comfort entry and it was more than that to get the fob and key plus programming.

Yes they need the VIN and yes they make sure your not ordering a key fob for someone else's car.

There are RFID chips you can attach to a key fob if you like to make it easier to find. My guess is you will never lose one again. Every time I have made an expensive mistake my subconscious makes sure I don't make that mistake again.

My car is five floors down in a cement vault so they're not gonna get it but I understand your point.

I can unlock my M2 with my Apple Watch if my iPhone is not around or lost or stolen.

Same at my house.

Both keys are in my key box and the cover is on and locked accordingly.
