You guys really deprive yourselves by not fitting your M2 with winter tires.
Sorry for bringing up the torturous winter rubber on rwd debate. It had to be said.

I live in DC, and perhaps the only time I wouldn't drive my RWD BMW is when it has just snowed. Of course I dont have an M2, and also have all seasons, but if you have winter tires, there is no reason to store this car in winter. The road are plowed and salted all the time

I'm driving mine all winter. I used to garage a summer car and drive a winter car but realized life is too short to drive cars like a Honda Fit for 5 to 6 months a year. I prefer to drive a car I really like all year.

I have enjoyed rwd cars on winter tires in snow before, such as my former '08 G35, and had been planning on doing the same in my former '13 335i. But I don't miss out much in my M2 - it can come out in winter anytime rain has washed most of the salt off the road and it's above freezing, so there's only three months out of the year when it has limited outings. Makes me enjoy those two cars even more in the spring.

I agree life is too short to drive a lame car in winter; it's nice to drive a car you really like all year - this is why, after 20 years of driving Toyota trucks (first a '91, then an '05) in winter, I sold my Tacoma in 2012 and started driving my GTI in winter.

Love driving it in the snow first car with a legit LSD and loving it. Does provide a bit of a false sense of security though given how nice and easy it is to drift
Haven't tried anything at speed though but then again don't intend on as that's better left to the track.

I kept the M2 in the garage last winter (DC area) - drove me crazy looking at the weather - trying to find those limited windows with no salt and warm enough temperatures.
Put me in the "life is too short" category this year. Probably won't keep the car long enough where I would need to worry about corrosion anyway (and recently finding mice in our garage was a factor in not wanting the car to sit there all winter). Just installed my quasi-winter set up this week (picked up a set of 788s and threw on some performance all seasons) and I'm not looking back. I'll save the SUV for when the roads actually have snow/ice on them. |

^ Yikes - that is exactly what I’m worried about. We caught a bunch in traps a few weeks ago and haven’t seen any since - so fingers crossed. But it was an easy excuse to finally get a winter set up.

I keep the M2 garaged on snowy and icy days mostly because I don't trust other drivers. You'd think getting ice and snow every year at the same time would teach people when to start paying attention, put down the phone, and drive slower as conditions permit- but nope. First few snows of the year I always pass a good few wrecks, interstate will be littered with them. If I am going to get hit by one of these morons, Id rather it be in my GTI.
It's my DD and track car in the summer though so whatever roughage I save it in the winter, I am sure I deal back ten-fold at Gingerman lol.

Driving almost any vehicle in fresh snow is great. Used to love taking my MGB out in the snow providing I didn't have to push snow. Drove my RWD 1er in the snow as well. Nannies make it easier, nannies off provides entertaining car control sessions. However, plowed[, cindered] and salted is the time I least want to drive my M2, my truck or any vehicle for that matter. The chemicals and sand/cinders/gravel is just too hard on the car and I plan to keep this one a while. I do miss driving it tho so it comes out when we get suitable weather. |
