I spray painted mine with matte black BBQ high temp paint with exhaust on car.

I first masted whole car with thin painter's plastic, then masted around muffler and exhaust tips.

So far holding up well after 2 weeks. Will see how it holds up after my autocross and track next month.

I did mine but am not happy with the amount of drips I got. Maybe I didn’t prep good enough. The primer went on ok but the paint isn’t to my liking. I guess I’ll wait and do it again when it’s cured

You can fix drips - sand and repaint. Do lighter coats and keep the can further away from the exhaust to avoid drips.

I used these for the initial prep: https://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Brite-.../dp/B000LPN3WQ.

They should also work great for sanding down any runs. You may need a more course pad depending how deep the runs are. I would finish with very fine above, then spray as Chris ^ mentioned; with more distance and lighter coats.

I have a couple small runs in mine as well. I cannot see them once standing behind the car. I was not able to lift the car as we are building a house and currently living in an apartment. Once in our house and a garage back, I intend to sand down the minor runs once the car can be lifted.

I probably have a few runs/drips as well (I noticed them during the first coat and on subsequent coats I tried to spray more evenly from a further distance), but honestly I don't care. It sits under the car, very few people will ever see it. It's not like it's a wall in my living room.

Ok thanks guys. It’s really not that bad but I’m super anal. I’ll probably just sand the few areas and respray when I have the time

Merged 12 threads on painting/obscuring the M2 Competition muffler.

Hopefully no-one's heat-resistant paint catches fire as a result of the exhaust fumes heat.

Other muffler threads:

Friend of mine 'obscured' his M2C muffler (aka 'the cow udder').

BMW, please take note.

Doesn't it bother anyone.....taking a can of spray paint to a 65k car?

It can't be that serious.

You're right, I'd probably use a roller, it sounds a bit more elegant!

That's what I did, bought me a 1qt can and a spray can. Lol. Now every two months or so I just use spray can to touch up smaller chips that flaks off.

This happened after my first track day yesterday with the new AA midpipe and painted muffler. I supplied the garage that did the job with the highest temperature resistant black spray paint (1100 degree centigrade) and it still burnt off 🤪

It may have been a problem with the prep work and not the heat.

Yes, I thought about that. Litchfield in the UK did it for me and said they fully prepped it before spraying it. I'm not going to sweat it though. I'll get it redone at some point.

That's too bad. I have not heard many people's painted mufflers flaking. Maybe i've not been paying enough attention though.

I'm thinking there will be more heat going through the AA midpipe due to the lack of OPFs and secondary cats. Combine this with the fact it's running circa 520bhp and it's been ragged around a track all day then I think that could be a reasonable explanation as this didn't happen before the track day.

I installed the MPerformance diffuser and bigger exhaust tips. I think it looks much better so I'm holding off painting the muffler.

Those tips are nice, where from.?

I've tried and tried but can't get the OE tips off to measure the tube diameter. I know they pull off but can't shift them without risking damage.
