Same reason the m235i/m240i has silver mirror caps... to get you to buy their m performance parts.

I would quit looking at it? It is what it is?

Manufacturers have budgets and regulations to deal with and stock components can sometimes suck. The low hanging muffler is a perfect example of this. Modding your car is fun and rewarding, especially when you make it "better than stock".

Much better argument than what I proposed in my post above.

If you're keeping everything stock because it's a lease, I'd honestly not worry about it. If anything, you're making the car an easier sell for any future buyer
We don't really know that it's cost cutting. The G80 M3 prototypes have a similar can. It might be for thermal reasons. Only engineers at BMW could answer this.

I don't want to paint it and then have it start flaking after high heat track days

From what I have seen online, the VHT paint holds up to extremely high temps. imho, the trick is to follow the curing instructions to the letter. Which I did.

**For added adhesion, I lightly sanded the can with 1000 grit sandpaper.

I have my infrared thermometer in the car and will start to monitor it.

I have no plans to paint mine since it doesn't bother me as much as it seems some others here. I rarely look at the rear and I don't care how it's perceived by other drivers that look at it.

As of now, I not sure if I will keep this car for at least a year or even 2-3 years max. So unit I figure out what I want to do or if there's another car that peaks my interest, I have no plans to invest any time or money in any cosmetic or performance mods.

A question for those who have painted their mufflers. Did you actually remove the can before painting it, or did you just carefully mask with paper all the parts and places you didn't want paint and did it still on the car?

It sounds like most people are painting it on the car. Once my car arrives I'll likely be painting mine but taking it off to do so...

I painted it on car, but...

I removed the tips, diffuser, and masked everything you could imagine.
I had zero over spray and I am 100% happy with it.

Best $10 you will spend on a BMW.

I'm not. Only because I plan on replacing it so painting it seems like a waste of time.

Painted it on the car, on the ground, rubber glove over the tips. Literally takes less than 20 minutes.

I'm not really impressed by any of the aftermarket solutions at the moment. The stock exhaust sounds pretty darn good. Especially in black.

Maybe the Dinan, not sure.

Not a full exhaust system, but AA mid pipe is the best option for the s55 that I've heard.
