iOS 13 Preview - Car Play Features article
Just read a Bimmerpost News article regarding Apple's iOS update and result updates of Apple Car Play (ACP). Several questions come to mind. First, can I have my iDrive 6 in my 18' M2 LCI updated to iDrive 7? If so, is there a cost. I love ACP, but I do have issues with connectivity as the are frequent "drops" in connectivity with ACP. I have spoken to my SA regarding an update for my iDrive, but have not heard back. But now I am thinking about requesting an update all the way to iDrive 7 to take advantage of the iOS 13 as it will soon be released in the next few months.

What you could do is have the dealer update your ISTEP software which would leave you with the same iDrive version, but a different patch. This normally comes at a cost of ~$150 but if you complain of connectivity issues they could goodwill it to you for free. |

Everything to do with CarPlay is being driven by the iOS device and the iOS software version. Very little happens on the car's hardware other than display and UI interactions. It won't matter if you have iDrive 6 or 7 -- all the iOS 13 CarPlay features will be there.

I'm pretty excited by iOS13 APC, seems like a huge improvement in usability (phone no longer tied to the screen on display) and being able to see more information at once.

OK, thanks for the info. I thought there may be some aspect of the iDrive system(s) the might mitigate what ACP can do. Car companies are not too with it with regards to technology interfaces.

Just got the IOS 13 today and I tried in the car.
It's big improvement in terms of using your phone and Waze or other apps can still be showing in the screen. Will test more later on |

This is the only way you can continue to keep an aging infotainment system current and why the auto manufacturers have pushed back for so long. They have made a mint on selling immediately outdated clunky navigation systems but are being forced by the consumer to provide this. iOS 12 was a nice update that allowed me to finally use Waze but the 13 update is way more of the update we have been wanting. The only issue I am seeing right now is Siri is not always working but I like how there is more information (or not) on the screen and if you enable dark mode it looks very nice and modern and easy on the eyes. I’m surprised with how polished it already is so it’s clear Apple thought a good bit about it.

So glad they are using proper album artwork with music as I never really liked the blurred/faded album artwork in the background look. The 3rd picture looks weird. Has the nav and audio squeezed into one screen and the same audio in the iDrive split screen like your phone and a usb device are both playing the same song at the same time unless the CarPlay music is now able to be shown in the iDrive split screen.

I have the beta as well. It's surprisingly far less buggy for the first beta vs iOS 12. One feature I really like is that the phone is no longer mirrored on the display. Waze can be up and I can be in messages (and Siri won't start reading texts aloud)... while parked of course.
