Supplemental Door Seals
Having reviewed this thread over on the 2-series forum, I decided to try some supplemental door seals in the hope they would reduce cabin noise. These are not an official fit for the M2, but my dealer's parts department found them quickly under 228i using the parts numbers. Total cost was $50, the arrived in about a week, and they took about 30 minutes to install on both sides (20 minutes for the first, and 10 for the second). They dry-fit so you don't need any messy adhesive or to worry about screwing anything up. Fitment is perfect, there's no change in this part of cars relative to the the other 2-series.
Given the low cost and ease of install, the only question is...is it worth it? I think it is. These seals fit in a gap between the cabin and the front fender. Without the seals, there's nothing other than the curvature of the door keeping air and front wheel noise from entering the cabin: You can actually see light coming from the gap between the hood and the headlight!! The entire area behind the fender is open to the door cavity and there is no seal. Here's a post-install picture with approximately the same angle on the same side of the car: Note that, when the door is shut, the new seal sits just beneath the seal behind the mirror and goes all the way to the bottom of the door where the under-side seal begins. This completes the seal around the door. I did a simple circuit of driving with some city and some ~85 MPH highway before and after the install. The most dramatic improvement is in reduction of front tire noise. There's some wind noise reduction and negligible engine compartment noise dampening. I recommend the modification if you have defeated ASD (otherwise you'd never hear the tire and wind noises over the ridiculous harmonic generator). A good install write-up is available here: http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showp...5&postcount=80. Instead of a ruler, I used a bone tool. Once you get the hang of it, though, your fingers are 90% of the tools you need. The trick is getting the vertical placement right, then it's just a matter of cramming the seal into the gap. |

I did this two months ago and you do get an appreciable decrease in road noise.

Installed these. After installing I am a little concerned that there could be a heat problem when running hard. The M3/M4 has a vent on the fender to let out under hood air. The M2 'vent' is a poser and doesn't really vent.
Haven't driven the car yet to know if the car is really quieter. |

Wow...thread back from the dead! I thought no one had any interest.
I have had no issues with the supplemental seals. I like the reduction in water on the sill when washing. I don't track the car so can't comment on "running hard" and the venting effect of no seals. Though, it seems unlikely much air enters orthogonally between the front fender and door at speed due to laminar flow. Based on irritating dirtiness, I think the main vents on our cars are over the center of the headlamps. |

Door Seals seem like a great investment...
2 more cheap mods that are great...
ELM327 OBDII Dongle and Torque Pro, or Carly Adapter and App (around 120USD for both) Allows full diagnostics and coding of over 11 ecu's including the CIC which was just added for F series...Meaning anyone can code there car or a friends non-M2 BMW....From DVD in Motion to DRL Brightness...Also has a detailed description of each of the thousands of codable features (IN ENGLISH LMAO), so easy a cave man could do it...Also has service reset for those who service therre own cars and battery registration...One trip to dealer avoided pays for this 3 times over... If interested: Droid users get the Bluetooth Carly Gen II adapter off amazon for 50-60 USD iOS Users get the wi-fi version If you need more info or a link PM Me, or if your on LI and want some coding LMK, no prob helping you out and saving you the hundred + dollars and hassle of remote coding... 2. about $350 but well worth it in terms of HP/Dollar, DEI's Cry02 Intercooler Sprayer, DEI's Intake charge cooler (about $100 bucks) and for $15 more the ACI Universal wiper sprayer used as an i/c mister...While C02 is sprayed the need for a large expensive FMIC is eliminated and prob is more effective...Combine it with a bigger FMIC and drop IATs by 50*F more...

I remember reading about this while my car was in transit. Def notice the road noise being quite substantial in the f87 especially on the highway. Glad I found this thread again. Going to order up a set for mine as well.

Looks like it could get pretty gross after a spring of pollen. Anyone care to report back after pollen season? I don't mind the noise level at all, so I can wait.
Thanks! |

Just installed mine last night and the drive in this morning was a lot better. It substantially reduces road and tire noise coming from the front wheels. Install was quick but take a bit of patience (especially if you're a perfectionist). Well worth the money in my opinion. I actually ended up having an extra pair of anyone wants them. My buddy ended up giving up his f87 allocation and got a f80 m3 last week so I now have an extra set on my hands. Paid 33 for it plus shipping. Let me know if anyone wants it for 40 shipped within the states. Shipping should be fairly quick. Pm me for details.

So I checked my M235i and it doesn't have these seals either, so I'm not at all worried about adding them to my M2 or the M235i. I just don't see the point.

It def helped with keeping the road. Pose out of the cabin especially on highway drives. Can't go wrong for such a low cost mod.

Like the noise. With my AFE Prodry filter it's all whooshes and hissing. Love it.

i love the idea of cutting down tire noise with this simple add-on. my only concern is the engine bay temperature. i wonder if adding this seal would decrease air flow from exiting the door seal. does anyone have any idea about that?
