M2C: sunroof or slicktop?
It's my turn to post a question that's probably been asked a million times before - moonroof or slicktop?
Which setup on an M2C 6MT will be more desirable in the second-hand market or does it not matter much? I plan to autocross and do HPDEs. I'm 5' 9" tall. Will I be able to fit in an M2C with a sunroof wearing a helmet?

Personal preference as there is no carbon fiber penalty for a sunroof on the F87. However, if you are planning on tracking the car, I would forgo it as the lower weight, center of gravity, and more general space for your head inside of a helmet makes the most sense. However, if you are planning on spending 99% of the time on the street, that would be a matter of personal preference. I don't have one and didn't want one, my wife on the other hand has a new Golf GTi and wanted it.
The upside is that it's nice to have the sun on your face when it finally is sunny in the PNW. The downside is that you can hear it rattle from time to time. This is very common on the cars as I even asked on a VW forum. So if you are sensitive to sounds, you should def skip it.

I have had both. But I found out that I rarely open the sun roof. Therefore my M2 is a slick top.

Interesting early results. I am skeptical that an extra 50 lbs for a moonroof makes any perceptible difference in performance for amateur drivers. But it's clear that the enthusiast preference is slicktop!

I have been owning cars since 1970 and I have always had a sunroof or moonroof (other than my 67 MGB convertible). I open it as soon as it gets above about 45 degrees. I never even considered the first M2’s when they were not offered with moonroof in the US market. And I have always had manual transmissions.

No sunroof is visually better for the car in my opinion, I had to order a car just for this reason as most cars that are ordered by the dealer in Australia have sunroofs.
Here's mine and a friends

I would get the rest of the roof wrapped in gloss black vinyl or PPF like Zero260in3
Regardless, I agree that slicktop looks better.

I literally just order modified from slick top to sunroof. While I track frequently, the reality is the car will still spend 80% of its time on the street. I ordered slick and my local dealer just got a M2C in on trade. It had a sunroof and my CA knew I wanted one. I was able to both perform a TD (first M2C drive!) and sit in the car with my helmet on. For reference, I am 6'2" and long legged. So I sit far back and all the way to the bottom. I cleared the sunroof with 2cm to spare. That's enough for me so I added it. The weight difference is negligible even if it is in the worst spot. Those that say it will be worse on track are full of shit. The biggest thing it comes down to is if you'll fit and if you'll use it. I had my pano roof open all the time in my company car and my wife's CX-5 lives with it open in good weather. I am a huge fan....
Lastly, I hate the glass on a silver car so I was going to stay slicktop. Another member on here wrapped his HS car with a black roof and it completely changed the car and hid the sunroof. That was the final nail in my decision to order it. Unlike e46 and e92 I think most opted to get slicktop's so I feel slicktop prod may exceed sunroof which would be rare.

So much this! As I stated above this look was my reason to do it.

Sunroofs are a waste of... everything.
Money, time, space, weight, complexity. I’m stoked mine is slick. |

If it was a pano no way I'd do it, every car I have had or driven with one always has rattles.

Hindsight, I wish I got the sunroof. The weight different in terms of feel is negligible despite what some may say. I also prefer the additional light in the cabin. Previously my M235i sunroof was always vented unless it was raining or I was washing the car. I miss it.

I love my sunroof and use it all the time. That said, I'll probably never track my car so there's that.

I also love and use my sunroof all the time. I really appreciate that it’s glass. In the Seattle winter, where it gets dark at 4:00pm, having a bit more light in the completely black interior makes a difference.
My car is a 6 MT. I’m 5’8”, I doubt you’ll have a problem fitting with a helmet, there’s still a lot of head room above (it’s to the side where there are clearance problems, but that holds true to both slick tops and sunroof cars.) Edit: posted from a phone, sorry the picture went sideways, but I think it still illustrates my point: for people our height, there’s enough headroom. Last 3 cars had sunroofs but I would maybe use them 2 times a year so I skipped it on the m2

Same for me. This is the first time I haven't had a sunroof on a BMW, and I really don't miss it. Being in the southwest I get blasted with sun anyway. If I want to get a sunburn while driving I will take my Rubicon out topless.

All my M cars have been slick tops.......but I'm a club instructor and track the car more than just once a year. Also run Auto Cross when I can. The real enthusiast driver will always go for a slick top sports car. My X3M has a beautiful panorama sunroof....and its never tracked. Very nice around town.
Look at resale value, M cars with slick tops and Manuals have higher demand, higher value. That's been my experience after owning three M cars in the last 20 years. All have been fantastic, But the M2 Comp is by far the best out of the box. As far as fit with a helmet? NO issues if you're under 6ft. |

Absolutely. I've always had a moonroof and would never order a car without it, but the M2 looks great slick top. I think for me it was the visual appeal of a clean roof on the M2's design, so I opted out. I am a heavy user of the moon roof in my other cars, but cant say i miss it in the M2.
