Looking at what the supra offers in terms of drag performance, lap times, aftermarket mods and the idea of having something a bit 'different' whilst also being a better daily driver has got me thinking about trading my M2 against one.

Has anyone made the same move?

This is nothing against the M2, it's a very special car and something I enjoy driving. I know I'd be losing the manual transmission but the ZF8 was very good in the 240i and I can imagine it's only been improved more.
This isn't that complicated.

You own an M2 comp with a manual.
If you test drive a Supra and you like it, and are cool with whatever financial hit/price difference, then get whatever car you like driving.

I'd opt for the manual m2 but everyone likes different cars and on an M2 enthusiast board, opinions will be skewed towards the BMW.

Buy what makes you happy.
I never said it was complicated.

I was asking for other peoples opinions on a forum of which people share the same car and possibly have had experience with the prospect supra.

I've learned of the oil consumption issue and the locked DME both of which I was unaware of and both would be important to me regardless of how good a test drive was.

Thank you guys for your responses.
I think you should also post on the Supra forum to get a better idea of supra specific issue You might encounter if that's your worry.

But I do understand your attraction towards a supra. I think it's a great car and it has quite the presence in person.

If it had a manual it would definitely cannibalize M2/M4 sales.

This guy made a similar transition from an M2 to a Supra & now moving to a 400Z.
He does talk shit at times but may be of interest to you.

The ONLY reason I'm not driving a Supra and instead have ordered a M2 is the transmission. If the Supra had a manual available I'd be driving that right now

Krombopulos Michael... we meet again.

I did not know that the preferred mode of transport for Gromflomite assassins was the M2. Learn something new every day.

I’d rather be seen getting out of the Supra, any Supra, than the new M3

Curious as to why one would not buy the Z4 rather than the Supra?

Completely different dynamic, or so I've read. Possibly different geometry and a stiffer chassis.

Having owned an m240i before my M2C, you not going to get the same adrenaline rush revving out the B58. When you rev the M2C out, there's way more excitement. It feels like a serious sports car whereas pushing the B58, it's more like sporty feeling car. That's the magic of a true M engine. That's why we pay the extra premium to own a true M versus an M sport lite. If the B58 was as exciting, why the heck would anyone step up to the full fat M? Just know that your stepping down which is fine.

Agreed with the drivetrain comments, but I do believe the Supra’s chassis is much more modern and superior to the M2C given that it’s on the same platform that underpins most of the G series BMWs. How else could the Supra keep up with the M2C during the Randy Pobst comparison lap at Laguna Seca despite being down 70 hp?

So it boils down to whether you prefer a bonafide M drivetrain or an objectively superior chassis. I chose the former

totally get this, also coming from a m240i...I agree the s55 has a character and eagerness to rev and more drama as it builds revs....for us less technical types what is the magic in the S55 which makes more of an engaging engine than the b58? is it more complex internals?

If I decided I could fill the vehicle spot in my garage with a 2 seater like a Supra I would not do it with an M2 or a Supra. No chance. I'd have to go with something lighter and/or more focused than either one of those.

A daily driver Supra implies that a small or nonexistent backseat is acceptable. In that case any M2 would be ruled out for me. For similar money I'd have a 2009 - 2012 911 if the quality of the driving experience was top priority or a 2012.5 - 2014 911 if I prioritized newer infotainment and comfort. None of them should cost significantly more to maintain than an M2.. my 911 sure doesn't. Plenty of choices in the $50k -55k range and all would be better to drive and nicer inside (quality wise) than an M2 or Supra if you do not require backseats for passengers.

I have yet to make $1000 in repairs total on my 10 year old 911 and I've had it 5 years and 30k miles. I bought tires, brake rotors and pads, motor mounts... all regular wear items that are not repairs. So far the only actual repair was a window regulator went out on the passenger side when the car had CPO still a few months after I got it. And I could sell it now for $5-10k more than I paid 5 years ago...

Now if you were talking about the original E85/E86 Z4, that would be a different story.

I looked pretty closely at the Supra before making the call on the M2C, it was a bit of a tough call so I get the attraction, think they nailed the design, looks great. But manual was worth a lot of points to me.

I'm 6'1" and I fit in the Supra and everything but the in and out and getting settled was just fiddly I found whereas I slid into the M2 and was immediately at home.

Again as many have said, it's for sure a personal choice, good luck

The amount of times I actually smacked my head against that stupid roof line... I could have ended up with a concussion! 😂😂
Just watched your review mate. Very good and unbiased considering you own a mk4 supra also.

Out of curiosity was there a reasoning why you didn't go for the manual version manual M2C?
