Bay Area Performance Shop

Hey all! Finally getting my AA EL mid pipe next week and looking for shops around the area to get it installed. I’m based in Pacifica but open to going anywhere around the Bay.

Some shops I know of so far:
Performance Technic in Fremont
Performance Dynamic in San Jose

Griffin Motorwerke in Berkeley
Edge Motorworks in Fremont
VT Motorworks in Pleasanton

I wouldn't recommend Performance Technic. Had a poor experience with them.

Offline, I would be interested in what type of issues you had at Perf-Tech. I've had all my work done there so far without any problems. But everything I have had completed has been within the last 12 months and it's been modifications to a new car.

They've done things to not make me trust them on two occasions.

The first time was before I started doing my own wrenching and didn't know any better. I had them try to install some control arm bushings that the mfg said would work (but it turned out they didn't), and in the process of pressing out the original bushing they damaged and tore it, so they made me buy a replacement from them since the aftermarket parts wouldn't fit properly. Now that I know this platform VERY well, the only way they could've damaged the bushing like that is if they didn't use the proper tool to press it out (I've received the same feedback from
dealer techs I know). I've pressed out many of these bushings myself since then helping myself and others install these parts and never come close to damaging them the way they did.

The second time I went there for an alignment and got a VERY poor alignment. I specified what I wanted, and the car came back feeling like it handled worse. The car didn't want to turn like it did before and wasn't as nimble. I took it to another performance shop to check the alignment and what they measured wasn't anywhere near what I had specified. Either 1) P-tech was super sloppy trying to align it or 2) their rack was very out of calibration. After the second shop aligned it the car felt so much more nimble and handled well again. I notified P-tech of my findings and there was no offer to make things right. P-tech charged $320 for an alignment, it's only $280 at the dealer...

Later I spoke to a third shop (who knows P-tech well) and told them what I experienced with the alignment and they said they weren't surprised, as they knew that rack was old. The second shop I went to told me they get quite a few customers that come to them to fix things P-tech messed up on.

It seems to me like P-tech gets things right enough that they have a decent reputation, and that allows them to not make things right with people they mess up on.

Thanks. How far back did this stuff happen?
The shop is within walking distance of my house which makes it very convenient.

2018, so same folks as there now. Go a bit down the street to Edge Motorworks (literally only 1mi away) instead.

I'll check Edge out, thanks!
Still less than a 4 mile walk.

Thanks for the suggestion FaRKle. I’m going to VT Motorworks next Saturday to get the AA EL Midpipe installed. 👍

FWIW, I've had nothing but great experiences with P-tech for the past 2 years. Exhaust install, adjustments, alignments.

I also frequent SV Bimmer as they are a bit closer to my house, they do great work at very fair prices.

I would be interested in hearing about your experience with them, it's close to my house and I will be having something similar done.

I had been considering PT based on referrals but VT would be much more convenient.

I didn't have any issues with PT except I felt the price was high relative to the job I had done.

I frequent VT quite a bit since it's close to my house. I also send a lot of friends and forum members there for things like alignments (typically these friends/forum members come to my house and we do the parts swap, then go to VT for alignment or whatever else I don't have the equipment for).

I will be there Saturday as well! Maybe I'll get to hear the exhaust in person for the first time.

Matt and Wing are awesome, and did a lot of great work on my 135i before I upgraded to the M2C.

Ive always liked PT and researching around it seems most all the shops in that area are very closely priced.

I've had suspension work done at Silicon Valley Bimmer and general maintenance at Motorspeed West, both in Santa Clara. Happy with both shops.
