Recent Delays at the Factory?
I ordered my M2 Competition a month ago. I got a VIN number pretty quickly but the car has been sitting in the production queue without moving into production for nearly 4 weeks. I realize that the pandemic and the shortage of computer chips may be playing a role in the long wait but I'm wondering whether other recent buyers are having a similar experience.

Mine sat in production begins for a month, then finally went into assembly and was assembled and at port within 3 days. Then it sat at port for 20 days because of delays, then got delayed for 5 days in the ocean because port of Baltimore was backed up or something, this was during the Suez Canal blockage. Once it hit Baltimore the timeline moved as suspected and made it to the next port(mine) and was unloaded and at the dealership in about a week or less.

Thanks to everyone for the comments.
I called BMW Customer Relations who had more recent information than what appeared on the BMW My Garage page. Customer Relations are seeing an estimated completed build in a couple of days, though I was cautioned there could always be a delay during assembly. After completion I'd be at the mercy of the Transportation Gods. |

When you say "sitting in the production queue without moving into production" are you talking about status 112 or status 150? If it's status 150 then yeah, that's odd. If it's status 112 (or even 111), sounds like you didn't ask your CA what build week the allocation was for .

- Order received - Scheduled for production - Production begins [where my car has been sitting for weeks] Does that tell you anything? Thanks. |

I actually learned a partial answer to my own question by calling the BMW Genius line.
The website doesn't list all the production code statuses. In addition, the website is often behind the actual production. The most accurate information can be had by calling the Genius line who will give you the current production code status. The Genius line is 844.443.6487. You must supply either the production order number or the last 7 digits of the VIN. In my case the website status was listed as Production Begins (150) but the Genius told me that actual status was Assembly in Progress (154). Once the car is assigned "Shipped from Port of Exit" (195) the car can be tracked via marinetraffic.com. Hope this helps others awaiting word. |

112 is "Schedule for production" (meaning it's about to flip to 150 and this is the last chance to make any changes) 150 is "Production begins"

I might add that not all geniuses are created equal. Sometimes a genius will give specific production codes. That was very helpful. I've also had at least one genius who said that he had no access to production codes and who gave me an off the hip guess about how long a particular stage might take. Not so helpful.
