When do you replace your tires?

Trying to determine how far to push my rear PSS- Michelin says 2/32nds and I’m at about 4/32nds. Fronts are at 7/32nds so they’re staying for now, as much as I’d love to throw PS4S on. Traction is obviously not as good as new but not sure if I should bail on them for what is “technically” early or just replace now. What do you all do? I don’t really track the car.

Your rears are shot. Either buy 2 PSS for the rear or buy 4 PS4s. I went with the early PS4s and changes to 255/35/19 and 275/35/19. Do not mix PSS and PS4s.

Just buy a set of PS4S, but before you go in for the change get a video of some donuts/burnouts

Buy whatever tires you need now. In another month or two specific tires will be hard to come by for a while.

I always like buying new tires well before their life is over.

New tires are awesome!

And I usually can sell the old ones to recoup some of the new tire expense.

Interestingly, was just recently in a situation like this. Rears were near the treadwear marks (really how you should determine when to replace) but the fronts still had a lot of wear left. Agonized over the decision to replace all 4 or just the rears (cost vs mixing tires). Finally decided I just couldn't justify the cost of 4 news so went looking for PS4's, because I though the PSS's were all gone. Surprisingly, there were no PS4's available, guess there is a general shortage because of the pandemic. But the tire shop guy found 2 PSS's in the next state and had then shipped over, so just replaced the rears, but at least they still match.
Of course now I will eventually be in the same situation with the fronts. But I really wonder how much of an issue mixing really is, especially with the same manufacturer and class of tire.

Mixing tires is probably not a huge issue on a RWD car if you’re not tracking it or pushing it hard in corners. If you are though, it can it much harder to predict when they’ll break loose and it can destabilize the car.

The fact that I’m at 50% wear on the fronts and 90% on the rears to me means I can just replace the fronts once for ever two times I replace the rears. Next round will be a full set of PS4S. Spending an extra $700 and throwing away perfectly good front PSS just didn’t make sense. It’s not like they’re awful tires.

Think mine were ready!

This one took most of the abuse from an on-track spin at Buttonwillow awhile ago

Replaced with PS4Ses

Wow, you're lucky that thing didn't pop on you. I've had small chunks chip off of MPS4S as well. They can only do so much...

Whats crazy is I went back into the hot-pits after the spin and the marshal said I was all good to go back out - glad I realized I should probably stop in the pits and double-check the car...

Not entirely sure how he missed the huge piece of missing front tire

I normally go by sound/grip/wear bars since I don't ever get close to timing them out (I'm hard on the fronts as well, because I know they last twice as long as the rears). Decreased grip/performance is what I notice first, then sound. Once they start to hum they're gone, even if they're not at the bars.
