Excellent choice OP. I was in your predicament for almost a year, but in an opposite way. I was dead set at getting a F87 M2C but kept trying out G87 to ensure if I wasn’t making a mistake.
Once I drove the G87, the doubts were over. G87 felt a bit disconnected, less nimble due to weight and length of the car, and I just despised the one screen dashboard approach (so much that I even recently bought a pre LCI G07 X7 M50i to avoid the single screen dashboard bs). If you have been around BMWs since the 90s, there are many aspects of the F87 that keep you emotionally tied to E-Generation cars. The G series cars are for guys and gals that grew up with F series cars and to them G series is a refreshing change (both my son and nephew think like that). I got my F87 HS M2C (3600 miles on the clock) after patiently looking for one with under 5K miles, no mods, 1 owner. I wanted LBB but was willing to sacrifice color for lower miles and a garage queen. I am extremely happy with the choice and will likely own this for 10+ years. This is my 7th BMW (mix of M and non-M cars) but I am 100% sure this one will be in my garage the longest. |

When I was looking to let go of my E46 M3 and move to something more modern, I had the option of a new M2 and 2021 F87 M2C. If you remove the badges, I would have thought the M2C was the modern spiritual and physical successor of my E46 M3 in every way. It was just better at everything (maybe not sound) and had the right looks and proportions. I couldn't handle the looks of the G87. I don't regret my F87 purchase at all and over decades (I had the M3 for 20 years) I wager that I will love it more. I lament that I could not keep the M3 (no room) and my Son was more upset than I am.

I went from a G80 to a F87 comp do not regret it. The F87 is more nimble and better suited for track use. Think you made the right choice.

Agree. I am at year 20 (!) with my 2002 E39 M5. While there are many differences, I still feel the lineage - as well as to my 2007 E86 Z4M coupe. I think the F87 is the last homage to the analog BMWs of the past - MT (no disrespect at all to the DCT), round dials, a proper hand brake, etc. Not that this is BMW's fault. Time necessitates change. I'm sure I will have a EV "appliance" in my garage at some point for daily transportation. And to be fair, from reviews, some of the newer EVs are clearly performance cars. For now, for me, the F87 is a great DD.

I think a G87 would be awesome. Beat the shit out of it and it’s ok. It’s just a car and replaceable.
Same goes for the F87, except it’ll be a bit harder to replace. 11,400 F87s came to North America and only 5340 were Comps (if I recall the numbers from another post). So the F87 will prob be a rarer find in the future.

There must be a similar version for the M2C - I'll have to go searching. That is, once I can finally see thru my tears over having gotten the wrong version....

I found myself in a similar situation about four weeks ago. I was leaning toward getting a new car so I could spec it to my exact specifications, but after driving the G87, it didn’t blow me away—it had no soul. Additionally, not keen on its exterior styling or the new trend in car interiors with huge screens, a lack of physical buttons, and excessive interior lighting accents. I ultimately selected an M2 Competition, which was a bit daunting since it’s my first experience with a pre-owned car. Transitioning from an E46 it feels like the natural progression. |

As has been said so often, the N55 in the OG is more or less a series motor with a few improvements. It does not have the character of the S55. There is nothing wrong with that, but it is not a proper M motor to some for a variety of reasons, and, honestly, they are legit reasons. |
