Opinions- Can I mod during break-in?

Obvious answer would be that it's a bad idea.

I'm installing a tune, aftermarket intercooler and downpipe.

It's a lease, I'm not concerned about reliability 5 years down the road.

The cold weather is starting to settle in and I'm very anxious to see how the car behaves with these mods, before winter puts an end to it... Upcoming business travel will preclude me from being able to put much mileage short term.

Would everyone say it could be detrimental or cause some catastrophic issues?

Your input is highly welcomed!

I think it's always best to get the 1200 mi first service out of the way first, then MOD.

If you cant wait - purchase a Dinan sport (I feel the JB4 is too aggressive during break in) piggy back tuner to get a glimpse into the future power that awaits.

yes you can mod it. no it won't harm the car*. the difference will not be night and day, but you will feel some increase in torque. and you may need to reflash your tune after the break-in.

*: unless you mess up the install/flash

Well it shouldn't do anything detrimental to your car at all just don't push hard (~5500rpm or what ever it was in the manual) it till past 2,000km break in period.

The point of mod is to feel the difference. During the break in you don't even get to use the maximum of stock, modding isn't a good idea.

No it won't hurt your engine mechanically as long as you're easy on throttle.

Maybe he wants to increase low end torque, maybe he had alot of heat soak in traffic and when he went to get on the gas the car was pulling alot of timing, maybe he wanted more engine sounds. Mods will fix all of that, a tune will help with low end torque, an intercooler will help with heat soak, and an intake or downpipe will allow for better sound.

It's not a good idea if you're modding during break in and want to push the car hard instantly and expect longevity down the road as well. Another con would be that the dealer may not like those mods and warranty may be an issue.

I'd recommended waiting for break-in....that way once it's done, you actually put the car through its paces.

If it isn't enough power...then take it from there.

Personally I took off my tune

You can mod it during Running In - you just won't be in a position to drive it hard enough to feel the difference.

The money may be burning a hole in your pocket, but maybe wait until spring...

It could be for warranty reasons when you bring it back for break in service.

For me when I had my m235i I modded it day 1 and just accepted I wouldn't be getting any warranty after that. Was it worth it, probably not as I'm currently going to wait out my warranty on my m2 incase issues were to arise. The reason why is because if anything happened the dealership will make your life a living hell to try and argue that the mod didn't cause the issue, and I'm tired of dealing with dealers ATM.

To be honest I just run the stock tune with methanol for AIT control.

The car desperately need a different turbo if you really want a night and day difference.

....and frankly it has enough power for the street.
I'm keep this car so running increased pressures will of course cause some form of extra wear. Things will crop up sooner then later.

You know what it is, I just traded in my 16' M4/JB4 for this M2 and the lack of torque is causing me pain. I don't expect comparable, but I desperately want more, low down

The dealerships in my area are pretty chill, they always just asked me to remind them about the tune on my previous car, to make sure not to scan the vehicle during regular visits. Never had any warranty issue..

Of course, no expectation to turn this thing into an M4 (nor would I want to) but I'd just like to feel it try and break away from me a bit. I was hoping to accomplish this before the Canadian freeze settles in.

Most here seem to believe it's not the worst thing to do..

To provide an update- I installed the tune, downpipe and intercooler today.

The difference in power is incredible and the MPE really comes to life.

As an FYI, I'm probably averaging 20-22L/100kms... this thing is really drinking fuel now

As with my previous M4, I'll just change maps when looking for fuel economy.

For anybody interested, IMO these 3 upgrades provide a lot of value for $1500 CAD/installed...

That's pretty good! My m2 sucks fuel like crazy when I drive it hard as well, otherwise calm city + highway driving (more city biased) gets me 10.8L/100km.

Which tune, intercooler, and DP did you go with?

Funny you mention, in the short 4 days that I've owned the car, I noticed it was worse on fuel than my M4 was with the same relative driving pattern (my typical= heavy foot). Now with the mods, it's a bit more ridiculous..

Tune is JB4, CTS downpipe and CTS intercooler.

Nice mods!

You need to put a few km's on it before a good indicator of fuel economy will be present. But I've found the m2 to sound and feels so good I rev it out alot more than on the m4 (had one for a few weeks to borrow).

Is it snowing in Montreal yet? You can do some crazy snow drifts if you don't store it lol. (It's starting to snow here in AB).

You can turn off that fake interior sound off with the JB4 if it bothers you.

And if you're not in the states...eliminate that CEL from the DP.

Can also keep the exhaust flaps open full time....although not certain if it'll work with that MPE!

Glad you are enjoying the single turbo!

No snow as of yet..

I won't be storing it, it's my DD.. I look forward to drifting this winter and comparing it to the previous M. I understand why a lot of people prefer AWD for the winter but I've almost always owned RWD vehicles and I've never had issues with snow.. if you have good tires, you're mostly fine. On bad days, certain inclines can be challenging, but not a big deal for the most part.

You're right about needing more time to gauge fuel consumption. I just went for a little 15 km rip and averaged 19L/100kms.. and I was VERY heavy on the pedal.

Fun little car
