COVID-19 therapy: a long drive in our cars is just what the doctor orders!

Sorry, couldn't resist the elephant in the room.

No sports, no restaurants or bars, no gatherings of more than 10 people. Our local BMWCCA driver events for the spring are in jeopardy. What's a person to do? Wait, I know, take that beast out for a long drive. It's been a really early spring. Great weather. A long drive in our cars is just what the doctor orders! And because most people are staying home, there's less traffic on the roads.

Have to try and stay positive. Be safe and healthy everyone!!!

Good advice for everyone not in the San Francisco Bay Area. We just got into a lockdown. This means no going out unless its for essentials otherwise you could be ticketed and fined. It sucks

Curse those words.....I've three, potentially four, events lined up this year and they are the only thing left on my fun calendar at this point.

May 16-17 Windy City BMWCCA @ Autobahn
June 27-28 Three Balls @ Grattan
Aug 29-30 Windy City BMWCCA @ Putnam Park
Oct 17-18 Badger Bimmers @ Road America (TBD)

Please please please.......

I'm also putting in some decent time and money to give the E34 M5 a refresh which I will test out the morning of May 16 before retiring it from track duty to bring the M2C out.

The safest place to be during a pandemic is alone in my M2.

It's like my own personal hazmat suit...just equipped with a 365hp engine, olfactory pleasing exhaust note, and precision handling that will allow me to turn on a dime to avoid any virus in front of me.

First 2 track weekends I had lined up have been cancelled, very disappointing! Good roads in this area open up again April 1st, I see some very early mornings in my future to get on there before the swarms of cyclists.

You guys on lockdown (which is going to be pretty much everyone soon) are going about this the wrong way.

Buy parts. Buy LOTS of parts.

Then, on lockdown, you have no excuse but to go out, turn on the tunes, and start wrenching!

At least that's my plan-- buy 'em before I lose my job!

I'm already chalking up 2020 as "the lost year". I've been following this like a hawk, reading articles, watching multiple interviews etc. They are basically stringing us along so we don't freak out. A vaccine is a long time away, think years. In the interim they can't have everyone getting sick and overwhelming the hospitals, that would be absolute chaos. Not enough hospital staff, supplies, beds, equipment, etc.

The game plan is to buy time so that those that get infected are in small enough numbers that the system can take care of them. The long term outlook is more grim; they already know most people in the world (60-70%) will become infected at some point. The likelihood is not "if" you will be infected over the next several years, but more like "when". They may develop an antiviral drug that stunts the virus so your immune system can knock it out, but that too is a long time out.

You'll see them slowly ease the news over the coming days/weeks/months. It's a mess, but on the bright side it's a wake up call for so many things. It's time we got off our asses and started using our heads. Stay safe friends, and take every precaution not to get sick. It's not just your life you may save, but many others.

It's shelter in place, not a complete lock down yet. You are allowed to go shopping, get your drugs and otherwise do things required to maintain. Ever seen the cartoon "The Family Circus"? One of the kids, Billy?, always took the most indirect path to get whatever chore he was assigned completed.

I suggest taking the long way to pick up your groceries and/or prescriptions.

I'm still having my fingers crossed for the auto-x event next week. It would be just under 50 people which is currently the limit for public gatherings.

Dear forum fellow, that's definitely not worth the risk, for you and others.

Look at the magnitude of what's unfolding in Italy, Spain and elsewhere in Europe right now. How things are spiraling out of control. If you fancy playing Russian Roulette, mind you, because more than one chamber of the gun is loaded with a bullet. The coronavirus does its ontological thing: it goes viral. And it does not negotiate - it multiplies exponentially and is capable of killing you, injure you or at least make you feel miserable for some time. And it will also make you feel bad that you likely contributed to infecting others.

Forget any post I ever posted on Bimmerpost - just observe this one. Change the future: hunker down, now.

"A Dream within a Dream" - Poem by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849):

I was talking to the wife about this same thing...as long as we do not get locked down, I plan on a few get out of the house drives each week to get some fresh air and ward off the cabin fever.

I love your thinking. This morning I drove half an hour to a little bakery I love and after buying a hot chocolate and scone, I left a $20 tip. They were so appreciative that I was even there buying something. When the girl saw the tip, she almost cried. People working in restaurants and similar businesses are so scared their jobs will soon be cut. If you can afford an M2, you can afford to help those people out a little.
Drive, buy, tip as much as you can afford!!!!!!!

Well done. I can't help but think of all the food service workers/mom-pop businesses who were impacted by Maryland's decision to restrict restaurants, bars, and movies yesterday. This has such a huge impact on the people who need the money the most. This is going to be very tough for a while. I've been going to work every day just so I can focus and get work done, but even take-out restaurants are very quiet. I hope we flatted the curve and these restrictions can be removed after 3-4 weeks.

Unfortunately its the people least able to absorb a loss of wages that are in greatest danger of losing their jobs.

It's a bad bad deal all the way around. I commend you for paying it forward, doing something to help another, generally caring for the well being of your fellow man.

I intend to do the same thing whenever I am able.

Who said the essentials had to be only a short drive away?

NC has now asked all bars and restaurants to close. That makes it hard to do a long drive into the mountains. I guess I can pack a picnic lunch but an overnight stay seems to be out....

Case in point: a friend of mine that manages a restaurant that is part of a larger restaurant group was laid off yesterday. On his birthday.

Be kind to your fellow man.

So far one of my friends have already been laid off and many of my other friends are fearful they will soon be too. Other friends which have their own businesses are already fearful they will be unable to stay afloat and may go bankrupt. This is upending the entire world and this is only the beginning.
