Engine Ticking/Knocking on Start-Up
There is a ticking or knocking noise coming from the passenger side of the engine after start-up and until the engine is fully up to temp. Is this normal for the S55 or something I should have a dealer take a look at? Anyone else experiencing this?

Sounds like your valvetronic motor.. If you have ISTA, I would scan for codes. If not, you should still be under warranty, therefore it wouldn't hurt to bring it in. If it is valvetronic motor, that could set you back around $2,000 if not under warranty.
Does it make the noise when you're parked, engine not running and you go and open your door and then the ticking begins? Last edited by hlm2c; 10-22-2019 at 12:23 PM.. |

If I understand your question correctly, it only makes the noise while the engine is running. It continues to 'tick' when in motion up until the engine is warmed. There is no noise when the engine is off, but in aux mode.

I took it into service and had a tech listen to the video. His feedback was that it was likely just injectors working double-time to warm up the motor. For now, I'm inclined to believe him that there's nothing to worry about. If it get's louder or changes at all, I'll escalate. Wasn't thinking this was the same noise as the other owner whose ED was ruined. THAT noise was horrible!

It doesn't sound catastrophic to me but keep your ear out for changes in pitch and loudness based on applying throttle load or engine braking....and the noise from a mechanical failure will not change much based on engine/fluid temps. |

A new car should not be making this noise or any other ticking noise, especially if it "disappears" after warm up.
If the dealer thinks it's injectors, have them replace. Other owners have already told you that they don't have this sound. |

I agree with this as well. Possible Vanos noise. However don’t go to the dealer and act like a fool. “The forum says so” Mention that you ran into some owners with the same noise and it was addressed with Vanos Units. Ask bmw service center to open a Tsara case and submit a sound file. |

Awesome feedback, all. Greatly appreciated!
MR RIZK Is the case you referred to a single case (one car) or a known issue within BMW's technical database? Any insight you can provide on the details of the case? 190hpkilla Thanks! I'll do exactly that.

In general there is two types of ticking/clicking noises.
1. VANOS related 2. Camshaft related The first one happens when owners unlock/lock the car with the engine off. The solenoid ticks for a period of time. There is a few threads on here where replacing the solenoid fixes the issue. The second is like the vid in this thread and is to do with incorrect torque specs on the exhaust camshaft from factory. The fix is to remove the bearing cap and loosen the exhaust camshaft, re torque and re time the engine. There is a few cases floating around about this. The puma case referenced above is for this issue. When we looked into the puma system there was existing cases for this issue. I don't know if this puma number is for a single incident or problem but at least it is something to check.

The only feedback they've given me from troubleshooting is that the sound gets slightly better when 'removing the solenoid.' Hopefully they can make some progress this week. The X4 30i loaner is boring as hell!

Mine ended up being a failed lifter and rocker arm - the lifter failed, which then caused the rocker arm to fail. I honestly don’t know if the sound ever really disappeared when the car became warm or not, like you stated in the original post. Mine was definitely louder under load - but the sound was so different, unusual, and frankly scary that I took mine into the dealer the same morning that it started making the noise, and they had it about three weeks total. Also required the “regional engineer” to come out and look at it. Unfortunately I was out of town for work and didn’t get to go to the dealer in person or speak with the engineer, so not sure how all that worked logistically. The communication was pretty dreadful from the dealer, but I understand that they’re really at the mercy of corporate BMW when shit goes wrong and it’s not “normal” stuff (they asked me about 10 times about tunes, exhausts, etc.). Hopefully it’s something they can swap out easily for you. PS - my car was in Chicago when this happened but I’m in Dallas now. What dealer are you working with?

My car is at Sewell in Grapevine. So far the communication is as good as can be expected with so many players in different locations. I'm not trying to rush anyone at this point. I want them to take their time to get to the root of it and apply the proper fix. My car is bone stock, so no worries of warranty issues, thankfully! Welcome to Dallas! Did you bring this cold front with you?
