2018 B Street Setup (Autocross)
Now we have a few experienced Autocrossers from 2017, how do you plan on setting up your car for the 2018 season? (There’s a few posts that cover Autox setup spread around ... I thought it would be great to get changes for 2018 together in one place).
To get a feel for the car as-built, I ran RE71Rs on 19” wheels last year (stock size 245/265) through ~ 18 events and I was really impressed by how the car handled a variety of courses (even posting Pax FTD on some). For 2018, I’d like to up the tempo some. I’m installing the Dinan front sway bar and links. (If you’ve already done this, what stiffness settting are you finding best?) I’m also going to up the rubber ... it definitely needs wider treads. The question is, keep to 19” or add another set of 18” such as Apex SM-10. I’ve read a few posts preferring 18” with either 255/275/35 or 275/30 square. I haven’t seen any comments about how the size changes impact the suspension geometry (eg scrub radius) so maybe that’s less important than simply adding more width. So, if you are competing in BStreet for 2018, what wheel, tire combo are you running and what other changes have you done over the winter? Last year at SCCA Nationals, Alex Shchipkov finished 6th in BS and ran RE71s 275/35R19 front and 305/30R19 rear. Thanks for the info Alex. 275 fronts rub slightly, so 265/35R19 with no rubbing works.
This wheel sizing tool seems useful. I wonder if anyone has measured the stock clearances. https://www.wheel-size.com/calc/?whe...cl=30mm&sr=0mm |

Another option could be to do 18" fronts for 275/35/18 let's say, and 19" rears. Not sure what works well for the M2 at this point but it's an interesting option that could resolve the rubbing issue with 275/35/19, albeit at a shorter height.
I agree with your comment on the other thread that you need to buy wheels based on your tire goals.

I hate to bump this thread back up from the dead, but does anyone know what tire combo's the 1M and the M2's at the 2018 SCCA Solo Nationals were using this year? Looks like this platform is quite competitive in that class!

Conditions were pretty volatile at Nats this year and they had a wager on who would get the fastest wet lap on day two (think it was the Focus RS). M2 winning PRO was probably a better gauge... beating Heitkotter and AWD cars with launch control and a drag start is damn impressive. But classes may change and new cars may shake things up next year.
Looks like APEX EC7s on 27/87/89, and stock wheels on 76/66 according to the below link. Pictures from 2018 National Championships: Pictures from 2017 National Championships Last edited by cantcatchtomm; 09-27-2018 at 01:50 PM.. |

I appreciate the quick reply! I was actually competing at Nationals this year and totally understand the weather situation. I think our class (ASP) was running during some of the worst, if not THE worst times in regards to standing water. I'm considering switching it up and going the M2 route next year so I was just curious if the old mantra of "stuffing the widest tires possible" on the wheels still makes sense in regards to being fast in that class. I get that driver is the most important thing, but I was just curious what width tires the top drivers were running. From looking at the Solo results, it still looks like the BMW had the fastest wet time over the RS's, at least from what I'm seeing. |

Nice! I imagine an evo in the wet would be fun! A local buddy bought Brausen's FP evo and seemed to enjoy it. I wasn't competing at Nats but was tuning in when it was working. I thought I'd end up with with a Camaro SS 1LE in CAMC and chase local competitors Otis/Healy but I wanted a daily so I bought a new '18 M2 last weekend to chase my friend Bullis.
Compilation of wheel ideas: Fronts: TA16 18x9+42 is 18.2lbs with 275/35R18 RE71R 27lbs 25.6" diameter (15mm spacer/studs) 513M 18x9+29 is 19.6lbs with 275/35R18 RE71R 27lbs 25.6" diameter EC-7 18x9+31 is 21.3lbs with 275/35R18 RE71R 27lbs 25.6" diameter 763M 19x9+29 is 20.8lbs with 275/35R19 RE71R 30lbs 26.6" diameter (rubs) 437M 19x9+29 is 22.9lbs with 275/35R19 RE71R 30lbs 26.6" diameter (rubs) Rears: TA16 18x10+33 is 19.5lbs with 275/35R18 RE71R 27lbs 25.6" diameter 513M 18x10+40 is 20.8lbs with 275/35R18 RE71R 27lbs 25.6" diameter EC-7 18x10+33 is 22.0lbs with 275/35R18 RE71R 27lbs 25.6" diameter 763M 19x10+40 is 21.8lbs with 305/35R19 RE71R 31lbs 26.2" diameter (1.1" extra tread width) 437M 19x10+40 is 23.4lbs with 305/35R19 RE71R 31lbs 26.2" diameter (1.1" extra tread width) Then add sway, brake pads, and exhaust. Im leaning toward the TA16/437M combo using the logic that the 2.2" of extra tread in the back will help put power down. But for $800 the TA16 cuts almost 16lbs of unsprung weight, which seems like it might be the best way to go. LTW5 also worth considering as they'd be 2.2lbs lighter than TA16 and $650 cheaper but cast not forged. Attached is a breakdown of what I could find. Thanks for sharing all of this info! So it looks like you've ruled out anything narrower than a 275mm up front? I've also been a firm believer of running the widest tire possible. Lot's of things to consider here before diving into it! At least I have the winter to mull this over, haha! It definitely looks like running an 18" wheel/tire is the way to go, just by weight savings/rotational mass alone! Any idea if these top guys were running manual transmissions or the DCT? Thanks! |

I haven't found a single M2 video from Nationals. Only video I've found was this of Ryan Clark (2017 champ in Cayman S) driving a competitors M2. Even with shifting into third on accident and it not being his car, he was only a few tenths off his Cayman S that won that year... |

I see that the HRE FF15 comes in an 18x9+35 20lbs (would require spacer) AND 19x10+40 22.4lbs. It's one of the only wheels that I've found that would do the double stagger and be B-Street legal. Another more expensive option I'm highly considering is the TE37 Saga in 18x9 +23 in front and (although the Saga comes in 18x10+34 for the M2 specifically) TE37 Ultra in 19x10+34 in the rear. The Volk's strength/weight/appearance is a great combo, and they wouldn't require spacers like the TA16 would. From another thread it sounds like a lower offset in the back with a 305 would rub though, so the TA16 with spacer up front or the TE37 18" Saga with more $$$ is the way to go. |

Nothing like ordering a full set of rims a few days before the final event of the season. That'll learn me to run SSC for the year.

I'm told I fared ok for my first event. I made some stupid mistakes like missing a shift, so the pressure can be intense the first time. The courses were very different to what I'm used to. Lots of U turn sweepers that we don't see at Devens in MA since we do a loop around an airfield. Not sure if I'll keep the M2 for next year or move to another class. It's a very competitive car though, even against new Caymans. |

I assume the clearance will be similar on the M2C where I'm stuck having to use 19" wheels due to the brake size. Otherwise (and if on the OG M2) I'd probably look to run 9x18 with 275/35-18 on front and the 10x19 with 305/30-19 in back. Stuck with just 19", it would appear the two choices are 265/35-19 front and 305/30-19 rear, or 255/35-19 front with 275/35-19 rear (for RE-71R that is). Regards, Chuck
