I need a new vac
I'm soooo sick of dealing with my POS vacuum cleaner. It has NO indicator at all that the bag is full or otherwise not working properly, so it isn't until you hear the vac straining and making odd noises that you know there's a problem. Plus it's useless when you're trying to drag it around corners and such.
So here's what I'd like in a vac. 1. A canister vac. I like the rolling canister type with an upright "beater bar" that has a belt-driven brush. 2. Bag vac. Can't stand bagless vacs except for small hand helds. 3. A visual indicator that the bag is full or near full. 4. Something that rolls around corners easily and can run over its own power cord (something my current vac won't do). Anyone have a vac they really like?

First you better get more toilet paper, don’t worry about the vacuum cleaner! Second, I’m with Nuckle, we have a Dyson and while it is pricey it is so much better than any other vacuum we’ve had.

Yes. We had a Miele canister vac for years and thought it was great. Got the Dyson and realized what the Meile was missing!

I'm curious why you want a bag. I've never owned a vac with a bag, sounds like a royal pita. We've had several different ones over the years. Nothing that really stands out, however we bought a small battery powered handheld dyson for the rv last year. We bring it home when not in the rv and honestly it's been all we use at home. Mainly because it's so convenient, small, no cord to deal with. We can do the whole house on one charge if we use the low setting, if we go max we will run out maybe at like 3/4 of the house. We only have tile and laminate though, couple small area rugs, but do have 2 dogs and works great for their hair.

I actually prefer my Miele to my Dysons. I wear Etymotic ear plugs when I use my Dyson, fugger is stupidly loud. The Dyson does suck slightly better, but it's annoying as hell.
Also sold my Dyson stick for a Shark. The Dyson stick body is so big it isn't of any use in a car, and again, it sounds like a pre-hushed Lear Jet. Also worth noting, I bought a Shark with two batteries and a charger that will charge both concurrently. You can't even replace the battery in stupid Dysons, much less run two. I tend to use the Shark cordless to suck up the five animals worth of hair from our two animals on the hardwoods, then do a pass with the Hoover cordless wet vac. For carpet, it's the Miele unless the family is gone and I don't mind wearing ear plugs. |

Had numerous uprights, including a dyson. Dyson was good but loud as hell and cumbersome.
Bought a Miele and never looked back. Quiet, lots of attachments for auto.

We have a Miele canister and also have a cordless Dyson (v8 I think) for quick uses. They are both good at what they do but are not really substitutes for each other IMO. Wouldn’t want to do a thorough full house vacuum with the Dyson but it works perfectly without needing the heavier, more cumbersome canister and cord for small areas, a spill or when we see some dog hair tumbleweeds. Costco has sales on the Dyson from time to time.
Before those we had various machines, including an older Electrolux. My dad used to sell those door to door and I remember going on some sales calls with him. At one time they were the best, but they changed owners long ago and are no longer the same machines relative to competition.

Im a freak about having clean floors and I'm with the other guys who said Miele. It'll fit everything you've listed that you want.
At one point we've had them all, Dyson, Kenmore, Shark, Hoover and by far, Miele has been the best as far as quietness, ease, suction and reliability. One thing though, go with a model with a power head if you've got thick rugs (we've got a Marin and a C3 Brilliant), they're both good but I like the controls in the handle on the Brilliant, but it's overkill in price just for that feature.

Had a Dyson pet upright and when it broke the repair cost/time was so great that we pitched it. Not really designed to be serviced, apparently.
We already had a Miele canister which I prefer. Got a Miele upright (stick, whatever) which my wife likes for getting under things. She also got a Shark upright with the detachable cordless for small stuff. She likes the Shark. We both use the Miele canister more than any other. It is now 10 years old and going like a champ. I have a Samsung robot that I had running at a house that we just sold. Kept me from having to go vacuum up bugs every time there was a showing. I intend to set it up here some day and see how it does with furniture. |

We bought a Dyson Animal V8 a few years ago. Our house is about 1200 sq. ft. hardwood with a few area rugs. The thing is brilliant. I hated dragging our old canister vacuum around and always having to plug it in someplace else because the cord was always just a bit too short. I don't mind vacuuming now it's so much easier. The thing will do the whole house on a charge plus our furniture. It's handy for taking outside to do the cars as well.

In no way does it match your list of requirements, but our Kirby G4 was one of our better home related purchases.
25+ years later and it still works like it's brand new.

I went with a Shark. I can lift off the canister and get way under low items. I have a Husky and it cleans very well. |

I grew up with a Kirby and we also own one of those too. Cripes, it's a tank and they still haven't fixed the problem of the hoses pulling apart if you stretch it too far. For 2x a week cleaning, it's too cumbersome, but for a deep clean you can't beat them! It's the handy-man, it's the painter, its the cleaning woman, it's demother! (It took me a while to figure out it de-moths and it wasn't going to hurt my mother )

Miele. Quiet, effective, HEPA filter on the outlet so it doesn't spew stuff back out into the air, gives you a nice, simple, container full of gunk to dispose of.

You already got your answer...but...100% Miele.
Our's is a couple years old...the one before that is 13-14 years old...motor replaced by Miele (for free) at 8 years old...and it's still running. Buy a model with the powered brush head, for sure. I think our current one is the Brilliant C3...it's an ugly bronze color, but other than that, it's great. Best Vacuum, out of Chicago, usually has the best prices on Miele...although I got our newer one from a small vacuum shop in upstate NY who sold it on eBay (probably wasn't supposed to). -Mark in St. Louis |
