For me, DCT no question. It has been ordered. On the track I'm a pathetic sloppy mess with a manual transmission. This is with 20+ years driving a manual. I'm pretty great on the street and rather enjoy rowing the gears.. But it's just too hard to nail those downshifts at the track. EVEN with a rev matching manual gear box, at least it is for me. I also aspire to learn and practice two footed driving. I think my needs might be a bit unique. If you love the feel and involvement of a manual do not hesitate to get one. If lap times and track nonsense is something you're considering, you can't beat the performance of modern DCT like transmissions. I commuted in LA traffic for years with a manual transmission, wasn't that terrible, most cars have enough torque to slowly coast bumper to bumper in 2nd or 3rd gear. I can't imagine the M2 clutch will be that heavy.

As I'm planning to order my forst "real" M switching form my m140i to an M2C this month, I'm in the same trouble. Which one to choose? If you asked me two years ago, when I've ordered my 140i, I would surely have answered MANUAL, for a couple of reasons. It's more engaging, it has less probabilities of electronic failures, the car is really in you hands, etc. But....as I had my M140i with the ZF8hp, because here in Italy the manual version is not selled anymore, now I have to say, that it's a decision that is now make me thinking a lot. I know that the DCT is not comparable to the ZF, but on a car like the M2, both the manual and the DCT are the choice. The only difference is what would like to do with the car. If you don't mind the 0-62 time, the efficency, the milliseconds of a gear shift and the lap time on a race track....but you want to have something really special that makes you driving every time you seat in the car, the Manual is the choice. On the other hand, if you look at the technic devices, lap times, milliseconds etc, the DCT is what you need for sure. By the way, this doesn't means that with the manual you cannot go on a race track, but with the manual box things are more challenging for you, and for instance, it would be difficult for you to set the time as better as the car could do, and also, I don't agree with whom who say that is impossibile to drive a manual every day on traffic......it depends on how much are you disposal to use the left leg and foot, nothing more.
Both are wonderful, and both gives something special to you, but both have cons...the manual doesn't allows you to have the most fast performance possible from your car, and the DCT doesn't "connect" you with your car and doesn't gives you a 360° driving experience. But rememeber, both are the choice, it depends on what you want from your car. In my case.....I really don't know. I would like the manual, as I live in Italy and I'm lucky to live close both to the sea and to the mountains, I don't live on a big croudy city, and I have a lot of wonderful roads to use for my driving experiences. But after nearly two years with my M140i and its ZF, I'm in love with that gearbox, and believe me, I enjoy a lot as far as driving experiences with it. Good luck with your choice, but both will be the right one. |

I think I’m going to stick with DCT. Having driven an automatic on holiday for a week and coming back to a manual Cayman , the manual was heaven! But that was just for a short trip and the clutch is reasonable heavy.
If this was going to be my second car , i’d have a manual. Unless I was going to track it, then I’d have the DCT |

I flip flopped twice on the transmission. And yes I do love rowing gears and the overall connection to the car. However - I went with DCT again. The shear speed, launch control, and those downshifts. Had to do it again.

it is a 50/50 choice for me.
but in my country you pay more for a manual because of higher co2 output taxes So dct for me. But i love manual too. |

^ It s.cks!
€8.000,-- more on a manual in the Netherlands due to CO2 taxes. Wel, I did it once, a MT, on the regular M2 The M2C will have DCT, MT is way to expensive now. |

Manual here. Mine is a daily, however, I do not have a difficult or long commute.

Manual all the way. Have driven nothing else for the past ~18 years in Houston traffic no less. Just prefer the experience / level of involvement.

Can transmissions choice be engine dependent? What I mean by that is do some engines feel better with a certain transmission? Does anyone (maybe from the f8x forum) know if the MT is a good match for the S55? From what I’ve read the MT is a hit in the N55, but maybe due to the increased power of the S55, it would mate better with a dct?

The manual was an afterthought and implemented only due the high demand in the US market, a year later.. I am assuming the DCT for the M2C is better tune exactly for the S55 motor producing a seamless power output. I don't care, I still want the manual, regardless if it feels mis-matched and I'm sliding all over the place.. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/bm...earbox-is-ours |

For me it's easy, to track the car, go with DCT, it's faster and more enjoyable for most of people. Manual is perfect for public road driving. Going into winding back country roads on weekend mornings or a nice trip through mountain roads occasionally. Can't go wrong with either. I'd want my M2c in manual if I was to get one.

In Portugal you have to pay an extra 76 Euros for the privilege of driving a manual M2C... (when you add the difference in taxes and subtract the DCT cost).
Guess what was my pick? Last edited by Abrunho; 08-02-2018 at 04:28 AM.. |

I went for DCT as although I loved manuals in the past, those automatic gearboxes have become so good in speed and fuel consumption for DD that I would not revert back. Yes MT is engaging, but how many times do you really need that ?
