I've always been interested in the M3 and M4 and never really even gave the M2 a look. Well I went to a local "luxury" dealership a few days ago and they had an M2 OG and though I didn't go for that car, it has been on my mind non stop since I've seen it to the point where I'm actively looking for one.

So this will be my daily driver, I work an interesting schedule of 1 week off 1 week on in a hospital overnights. My commute isn't that long, less than 15 miles round trip. This is probably overkill for my needs but after owning the X6M, I really do love these cars and always have since HS. I have two kids under 8 who will be fine in the back.

So afterall of that, if you had the choice of an 2018 M2 OG (currently $45k but would try to get it down to 41.5k) or 2019 M2C ($48 k firm) w/ the same mileage of ~ 35k miles, which would you be more inclined to purchase?
Similar to m2ss, I've owned both an '18 and my current '21 comp—just not at the same time. Probably some questions to ask yourself:
  • Do you feel like you'll want to modify the appearance and/or performance?
  • Which car do you find more attractive out of the box?
  • Are you ok with a higher cost/payment but also knowing you'll likely get a higher resell? You've got 2 young kids, this may not be a forever car—is the lower cost now advantageous?
  • Are you someone who tends to want the "highest spec"?
  • And lastly, why are you getting out of the X6M and what would you miss?

I think stock vs. stock, the Comp is the better driving car, if only by a small margin. The steering feedback is improved, the power and its delivery is noticeable, and potentially because of its weight or maybe BMW quietly updated the shocks, it drives a little more damped. The S55 is not some peaky motor either—it produces quite a bit more torque (unless you truly care about making torque below 2700 RPM) and revs higher as well. In terms of a street car, almost everything else is subjective and related to appearance or small experiential things (M1 and M2 settings).

My OG was a brilliant car which I did Euro Delivery with and owned for 3 years, but I had some cognitive dissonance about the comp's weight and it only making 40 more hp. Ultimately I made the switch because for me, the stock performance and performance envelope is higher and I was falling down the black hole known as tracking. Both are competent and fun street cars each with slightly different character that largely comes from their engines and appearance. Ultimately the decision, I think, is a personal one and those of us who are current owners are prone to some tribalism so our answers likely come with a side of bias .

It always amazes me to read lines like these. Not because I think people are lying or that they all suffer from confirmation bias, but because my own experiences were so different.

Before buying an OG M2 I secretly had my heart set on an M2C, after all, it was clearly an upgrade. However, upon driving them side by side (used '18 M2, new '19 M2C) the N55 car felt as if it had more grunt, and by quite a margin. I chalked it up to the '18 having 4,500 miles on it.

But 2 months later when I found the perfect used '18 I had the opportunity to drive a new '18 and new '19 M2C again (completely different cars), and without a doubt the feeling had not changed. The '18 just had more grunt, and seemed more rowdy. It was louder overall, and "felt" edgier and lighter. The M2C "felt" more civilized, for lack of a better word. I ended up buying the used '18, and I'm quite happy with my decision.

I'm starting to think it comes down to 6MT or DCT because some months later I had the opportunity to flog a DCT M2C and the difference didn't seem nearly as pronounced, ie the M2C felt quite a bit stronger with the DCT, but my N55 car still felt stronger in the lower range.

It's probably a combination of the sound, the weight differences, 6MT vs DCT, and really how hard the car is driven. I've never believed there is any difference in performance, 6MT vs 6MT, until above 100 mph.

Maybe I just didn't drive them hard enough. Then again, I'm not regularly over 100 mph, preferring the corners to the straights for sure.

Anyway, great response.

2017 OG M2 single owner came up at a local dealer with 17k miles. Made me an offer I couldn’t refuse and here it is in the garage. 6 speed manual, first I’ve ever owned and is a very forgiving to learn manual on. Cars handling is freaking insane. I love this damn car and I’m only two days in.

Congrats! Excellent choice. Just be prepared to be berated for arriving home late after every trip to grab some milk! 🤪

Well done!

Some mod recommendations:

- Remove the wheels asap, clean the hubs thoroughly, paint black, replace wheels, use no anti-seize
- OE black front grille surrounds
- BMS clutch stop
- M Performance suspension (used) set to 595/600
- 12/10 Burger Tuning spacers (only after drop)
- M Performance shift knob
- All the MP carbon exterior bits + the CS rear spoiler
- Used Fabspeed sport cat (no cel, no tune needed, some volume, more artifacts, small bump in power and response)

And if you need OE parts, use getbmwparts.com, they're either the cheapest or close to it, and great to deal with

Thanks for the suggestions. A lot of this list was already on my radar so good to see eye to eye. I actually like the color of the wheels but my plan was to get some split spoke 19s with some summer tires and either use these wheels or get some 18” wheels with winter tires. I have to be at work no matter the weather so I will def need some winter setup.

Edit: I think I’m off base with that first bullet. Can you elaborate more. Thanks.

That's what I did when mine was a daily, I used the OE wheels as a Winter set (shod with Alpin's), then bought a Summer set with nice sticky Summer tires. I'm not a fan of A/S tires, they're junk on such a car IMO, so there was no question I was going to have 2 sets. Once I bought a real daily I then sold both sets and picked up my dream Summer set (FI-R/Cup2). The car sleeps in any temp under 40°, so no micro-sipes.

BMW didn't paint the hub centers on these cars, and the wheel/center-cap design TRAPS water in there, so they rust heavily. This rust propagates onto the brakes and wheels, but if you'll paint the hub center it won't happen and everything will be cleaner.

Beyond that, if you'll use one of those little suction cups to remove the center caps and dry the hub center after every wash or rain it'll keep any new rust from forming for sure. It's a few seconds of extra work, and well worth it IMO.

MComp ride felt more composed and the S55 drew me in more overall and felt more NA

if you drive them back to back you will know which one speaks to you more

It seriously sounds like you never really drove that car the way it was intended

Between the comp’s lifter problems possibly grenading the engine and the unfixable roof issues of the cs, the OG is feeling like the only reliable f87 model. Imo.
