install questions for Vorsteiner rear spoiler install
Just picked up a new Vorteiner VRS rear spoiler. Had no problem removing and cleaning up the trunk thanks to info on the blog. But while there is a lot of great info on the blog I still have a question or two I am hoping someone can help answer before install.
Tape and adhesion promoter came with it but no instructions on placement. There are lots of videos about where to place the tape but not for Vorsteiner, so not really sure if the tape should just go on the leading and trailing edge of the spoiler or wrap all the way around the edge as the spoiler is similar to the RKP on the sides? Video from Ind RKP install shows only tape on the front and back edge but others also tape the sides. Concerned about water getting trapped under the spoiler. Or does it matter? Also the rear part and side of the spoiler have a 1/4" bump/raised around the edge so does the tape still go 1/8 " from the edge or place it in the recess? Would look cleaner in the recess but not sure if the 3M tape will contact the trunk without trial fitting and if its too low, them must remove and get more tape |

Can you show a picture of the underside of the spoiler? Just curious how wide it is.
It won't hurt to put adhesive across the entire length for the leading/trailing portions of the spoiler. Water getting trapped really isn't much of an issue other than it may drip out even when the rest of the car is dry. I have this problem on my E46 roof spoiler. A lot of the fit with taping will be trial and error. You may want to just tape the area you are concerned with (recessed area) and test fit it.

Here are some pictures.
Thinking of ordering some more tape just in case but I don't really want too. Nobody has 3M vhb 5952 tape where I live. Any idea if its ok to double layer the tape if I need too? Read somewhere that someone used 3M vhb 6394 because it was thicker tape. Either way if I want/need more tape I would need to order off amazon. And then have to wait longer to install. |

It looks like the 6394 is 1/2" wide by .090-inch (2.28) thick, where the 5952 is 1" wide by 0.045 inch (1.14 mm) thick, so you would be getting twice the thickness and half the width with the 6394 tape. Which tape do you have? This is how I would apply the tape to the spoiler.

The above post pic is what i did. I also ran a thin bead of black sickaflex around the boot spoiler, front lip & diffuser. No issues so far. Hope that helps.

Thanks Ack for the input. Think I will try installing the spoiler this weekend using the method you suggested. The weather is supposed to be nice and warm.
As for what type of tape I have I don't know. Tape came with the spoiler in an unmarked zip bag. It's 1/2 wide with red backing tape and dark gray tape. Picked up a roll of 3M 6384 just in case I need extra. Will post a pic once installed |

I have seen others post they have run a bead of black silicon/sealant around the edge. Not sure about that. My experience is it can become a real mess if you are not really careful and not sure how I can put such a small amount in the space left.
Is that an Autoid front lip spoiler on your car TargaM2? Been looking at that and trying to decide. Would bite the bullet if they made one in abs or some kind of plastic. Love carbon fiber but would hate to have it ripped off and be out $$$. |

Yes it is. I purchased a lip protector which attaches to the leading edge which has payed for itself already when entering exiting sharp driveways etc. it helps with scraping but is not going to stop it being ripped off obviously, but im used to low cars so like to think i am weary of such things.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions. Looks like a succesfull install today. Weather was nice and warm, up to 30 degrees(86F) so tape should stick really well.
Only issue was tape was too thin in the center of the back of the spoiler. After some searching online I decided to double the tape in that area. Seems to have worked. Time will tell but I'm happy with the results. Car is filthy but here's a few pics. |
