Switching from MT to DCT

Has anyone owned an M2C in MT first and then switched to the same car but with DCT? Or come from the OG M2 MT into M2C DCT?

I'm thinking about possibly trading in my 2020 M2C and seeing if i can buy a used 2019 M2C in DCT. I'll lose some miles just from the trade alone (my car only has 3500 after 8 months of ownership) and i might come out a bit negative as well.

But heres my reasoning. My trackcar/weekend warrior is a Honda S2000. Right now nothing i've ever driven comes close to how good that transmission is save the new MX-5 Miata. I dont really like the MT in the M2C very much. I feel like i cant really enjoy all 400 horses that i got when i bought this car. Also recently my clutch foot has been acting up due to a medical condition i have and stiffer clutches make my foot more tired than it needs to be. I was also thinking of just jumping to another car like the Supra or maybe even a used 918/718 Cayman. However i really do love this car. And honestly theres not a single car out there that has what this car offers.

2-door sports coup with 4 seats that can fold down, RWD, over 400hp, good looking, and for only 60k. Nothing else compares.

I had an manual E46 M3 and now have a DCT M2. I have zero regrets about switching and the DCT is a lot easier to drive in Seattle’s traffic. It also doesn’t hurt that the DCT is faster and gets better gas mileage.

Financially = no.
Physical discomfort = yes.

If the decision is really about transmission feel, you will enjoy the car more with a few modifications like SSK and some bushings to get short and crisp throws. I have two S2Ks including a CR which has even more mechanical feel due to 6% shorter throw with lighter shift knob. Initially I started to compare and then quickly realized even with my future transmission shifter modifications, the M2C will not shift as mechanically as the S2K, but should be vastly improved. I just opened my mind to a different shifting experience and quite honestly enjoying each car for its intended purpose.

M2C = all around fun car and DD
Base S2K = track duty and top down weather
CR = Storage

I think this is the pertinent part, at the end of the day if your body isn't having it don't strain yourself and just get the DCT. The benefit of the MT is supposed to be feeling more connected to the process not greater fatigue or discomfort.

xxyion sucks that you have to make the change. As an out of the box option, list your car on the member classified for a swap. Maybe someone like you wants an MT and regrets the DCT? These cars have barely any options so finding one you like shouldnt be an issue. Or, trade with a dealer for a gently used 2020 like yours. May have to pony up $2k to make it worth it for a dealer (and to get the DCT), but its worth a shot.
There is endless MT DCT debate here, and I drove MTs for a long time and was even going to get a MT M2, but the DCT is fantastic and I have only one regret that future BMWs wont have the DCT. Get what will make you happy

Agree with this 100%. You are supposed to enjoy driving this car...if having a MT prevents you from enjoying the car, get the DCT. You'll waste more money paying for a car you aren't enjoying vs the cost of getting yourself into a DCT you can enjoy.

Good luck to you and I hope that clutch foot feels better!

Being a die hard manual guy, I had DCT both in M3 e92 and now in M2C.

The reasoning is pretty simple. I have 911 GT3 and for me it was Manual only as manual in Porsche is definitely better. Aside from that bucket seats in Porsche fix your body better than BMW seats. So Porsche buckets are holding your body good enough for you to concentrate on shifting when driving fast. In BMW seats you are not fixed properly which means you can’t properly use both feet when shifting gears.

Besides the above DCT gives a better feel than PDK. The shifts of the DCT are less comfortable than PDK in a road legal Porsche which makes the whole experience being more entertaining in BMW.

So for me the M car is definitely better with DCT.

As far as I'm concern, this is the only legitimate reason for forfeiting the manual option on an M2, without the risk of losing your Man Card.. 💳

You have my sincerest blessing, I hope your condition gradually subsides and you can eventually jump back into a manual, with both feet - so to speak..

And you own a manual M2, I'm positive you won't have any trouble offloading it, without much or any financial loss, in exchange for another vehicle..

Sucks if you can't drive a manual for health reasons, regarding the manual transmission in this car its absolutely the best both the clutch and transmission, i love it

DCT , very fast and felt it to be faster than my car but end of the day its boring , hope you don't regret it , so give it a deep thought

I had a 2017 M2 with the manual and now have a 2020 M2 comp with DCT. This was my first DCT. For me, the DCT feels faster and is easier to live with daily. I also do the occasional track day. I have had the DCT for a year and do not regret it. It really makes the car more enjoyable for me. The car feels faster and I Have more fun driving it. I also have an E36 M3, which is manual, and satisfies my occasional need to drive manual. The M2 has so much power that I feel the DCT is better suited for it, but that’s just my opinion. Both are great, it definitely is a personal choice.

Unscientific opinion: there's more DCT owners that regret that choice than MT. But it sounds like a no brainer for you to switch if it's physically uncomfortable.

After 17k miles of shifting gears I would say the only time I've really regretted the manual was when I was stuck in traffic. The M2C is a DD so used it for my commute from the countryside to the city & vice versa, I was tired of shifting between 1st & 2nd. Now that I don't commute at all those regrets are minimal, I tend to only have them when I need to use the car for short drives where my laziness kicks in lol

I feel like there are similar posts in the reverse direction. DCT buyers who regret not getting MT. Maybe we need to start a car swap service here?

I support other's comments. I'm glad I got a MT but wouldn't even hesitate to switch if even the slightest physical ailment degraded the experience.

You hit on something I have noticed.

I had a 2016 M3 with a 6MT and the S55 engine. I have had manuals my whole life, but never felt comfortable with that combo. Then I drove the M2 with the N55 engine and immediately loved it ... and sold my M3 to buy one. The 6MT fit the characteristcs and torque curve perfectly! I have since driven several M3 DCTs, which were fabulous. And M2Cs with the S55 engine and the DCT which also were amazing.

My theory: 6MT for N55, DCT for S55.

Engines have different profiles and characters, so it makes sense that some are easier to live with and a better fit for certain types of transmissions.

There is one more element. Most likely the current M2C is the last BMW with DCT as it is very likely the next generation of M2 won’t have it.

Imho, the only justification anyone needs for their transmission choice is “I enjoy it more than the alternative.”

Good luck, hopefully you can find a swap on here for a minimal financial hit!
