MT owners please help - clanking noise from gearbox
Greetings,
I have posted about my problem in another thread, but looking for more answers about specific problem. From around 400 kms (car now has 5000 km) my car is making a clanking noise from the gearbox when pressing clutch in and releasing clutch back out. (More pronounced around 1000-2500 rpm) but also just going in reverse and pressing clutch in. Also when car is in gear and when I tap on accelerator and release there is clank from the gearbox that feels like something is loose. When the gearbox gets hot it is even worse. Video of the sound https://streamable.com/p7ehwl Does anyone else have experienced something like this? Thank you |

I haven’t heard the bmw make too much noise when pushing in the clutch, I’d take it to the dealership if you are worried about it. Hard to really tell how loud it is in that video. I don’t think clutch operation is totally silent.
My old 350z would make a pretty loud/similar sound every now and then when I’d push in the clutch and it was normal in that car (which had less sound deadening than the BMW.) it was my daily driver for 14 years without any clutch problems. But if it seems “not normal” to you, just take it to the dealer and have them look at it for peace of mind. |

I fell like I heard a slight clunking noise when going from a low gear to neutral/coasting at low speed. This only happens irregularly.

Probably not the cause or related but I had a 3000GT that made a popping noise every time I released the clutch and moved away from a stop.
It turned out to be nothing more than a plastic under panel getting torqued by the motor/transaxle and popping back during the initial forward motion. It drove me nuts for months until a dealer found it.

No noise in my car. I'd take it to a different dealer, or at least call every dealer within a few hundred miles and have the SA ask their techs if they have ever diagnosed what you're experiencing.

Interested thread, I hear the exact same noise but rarely. Never really thought much of it because the car drives completely normal. It's quite hard to replicate but I notice it the most when I'm on a hill and low rpm clutching into neutral, is that the same for you? I have maintenance coming up so i booked a appointment to have them look but my transmission doesn't make any noises.

It's the signature BMW driveline clunk in their manuals. Shift with more finesse and it won't make that noise.
Surprised nobody has mentioned it thus far. |

Dealer replaced gearbox and everything is the same, they said that they will inspect DMF when gearbox is off the car, and they said DMF is fine...
They said that it is the nature of the car and it is normal. To have a manual that you always need to think how to drive just to avoid the knocking... come on. If i could try the manual before buying , there is no way i would have bought one. I have had much chaper perfomance cars that you could shift by memory and smooth, and drove bunch of porsches ,and there was no clanking and knocking. in this car is hit and miss, very frustrating. If you add: too long and light clutch pedal, rubbery feeling shifter, CDV, and auto rev match and adding gas in low rpm, experience of driving this car is total crap. I usally dont like auto gearboxes, but in this case, sorry i didn't buy one . ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE??? COME ON!! Sorry for the frustrations. |

Hmmmm....I don't have any of these issues. Mine is a 2017. The clutch and linkage is precise and accurate.
I would recommend adding a Burger Clutch Stop. $10, and it is fantastic ! That fixes the long pedal throw issue in 5 minutes. |

Hey guys, I got a problem with my brand new and exotic car that's under warranty where the manufacture would even tow it and supply a loaner....but the hell with all that. Let me get some uniformed opinions from the internets from people that have never worked on a manual transmission, let alone even done a oil change on a BMW.

They are able to reproduce it right? If they're able to reproduce it they can't claim it's due to how you drive your manual. I'd be concerned that whatever this issue is is progressive and going to lead to premature failures, since it's not in the transmission the dealership just gave up.
