Salt Stains by Accelerator Pedal - Removal

I just got done cleaning the salt stains from the carpeting around the accelerator pedal (I know...on the day of the official end of summer...). This is the only area that the Weathertech floor mats doesn't cover well. I THOUGHT I read about someone taking their accelerator pedal off and putting plastic under it during the winter, but after searching the forum, I couldn't find any reference to this.

Has anyone done this or know how to take the pedal off to put plastic under it?
Thanks!

I've read that a Vinegar solution (approx. 1 tablespoon vinegar to 1 cup water) will dissolve salt stains.

Yes! It worked great! I used Apple Cider Vinegar. What I am curious about is how to remove the pedal for prevention this upcoming winter.
