Windshield replacement
Must get my windshield replaced. I've used Safelite with another car and had a great experience. Should I be concerned with carbon roof on this car and use dealership?

I wouldn't let Safelite near any car of mine ever again. FAR too many horror stories, including my own personal experience. They have some good techs who give a shit and do quality work, and far more who don't.
As for the dealership, they'll just sub it out anyways. I'd call my SA and ask him who they use and what his level of experience/trust is with them. If confidence is high, go with them. No need to do it through the dealership. Good luck.

Look for smaller windshield replacement companies where some of the better safelite techs that give a shit actually go.. ask them about their process for removal etc. but wherever they do it, make sure they install a “foam dam” otherwise the new adhesive will creep into your view inside the car. The foam dam keeps it in place since they lay it in a triangle. Formation /\ they can’t simply lay so little of it because there isn’t much room b it the foam dam helps that problem. It should be ok. Oh and personally check the glass for scratches and other imperfections before they do it so you don’t have to re do it later.

That's also good to know. I'm pissed. I have to get the new window tinted too. I swear a squirrel or bird dropped a rock out of a tree. It was crazy loud when it hit, and I wasn't driving very quickly. Maybe 30mph. It was so loud that I thought maybe it was a bullet. No one was around that I could see, and nothing from car in front that was a little ways ahead. Really weird experience.

Happy to help, if you like. I worked for Safelite (Home office) for 4 years and in the collision repair/claims industry for 25.

I would just make sure that they use OEM glass. Most places don’t unless you ask for it.

I have a small chip in my front glass that's been epoxy repaired and looks OK at best. I had issues getting my windshield tinted due to the chip so I only did the strip. It rarely bothers me but I do see it from time-to-time and I'm worried about replacing it. Watching this to see if I should get more comfortable with the idea.

Who is quoting you 2k+?
I did mine out of pocket with non OEM glass for 580 last fall. OEM glass was under 1000 installed but simply not available on a timeline I needed. |

Ended up asking the installer of my tint and ppf if he knew anyone. He said the Porsche dealership used Quakt, so I went with them. We'll see how it goes. They are also a preferred location with my insurance just like Safelite. I had a great experience on my last car. Ftype SVR. I wasn't sure if the carbon roof made things more difficult, but doesn't sound like it.

Make sure OEM Glass is used

I have extra insurance for OEM Windscreen Repair’s ; plus you need to ask the repairer if they have experience with bonding Windscreen Glass with a Carbon Fibre Roof . This ain’t no simple install and on this forum one of our OP’s had to replace his Carbon Fibre Roof (under warranty) which required directions/assistance from BMW AG Germany after consulting with BMW USA . Hope all goes well Cheers Bruce |

Update:. I didn't go as smoothly as I had hoped. When the glass was removed the installer ripped a very small piece of ppf off the roof. I'm really annoyed by this.
1. I can see it 2. It's in a potential place that could get a stone chip. 3. Might this start peeling at some point because I use a pressure washer. I'm struggling with what to do. The spot is tiny. About the size of a penny. My ppf installer is going to try to add a small piece. He doubts the longevity but willing to give it a try. I don't want to over react. It's going to cost $575 to replace the roof PPF, and probably another couple hundred for the cquartz finest. The installer will likely replace, but am I worried too much for such a small spot? I feel like if I were paying out of pocket $775 I'd try the patch. On the flip side we pay professionals so they don't f up our stuff. There were some other issues like gunk left on my paint. For a place that does the Porsches and Ferrari dealership work I was disappointed. |

I've made the dealer pay to have my car entirely re detailed and re ceramic coated for mis washing it. Made a body shop do similar for touching too many panels. Wouldn't hesitate to make the glass guy pay for new roof ppf and ceramic.

I think they are going to make it right. Installer didn't think he damaged the ppf, but I said he absolutely did. Not a chance in hell it was like that and I wouldn't have noticed. The installer admitted to not taking his time with the install. The detailer is going to recoat with cquartz finest at no charge. $575 for PPF. I've decided to have it replaced because I don't want to be pissed every time I see it, and I'll kick myself if the ppf starts to lift because of it. I think the large quantity of goop on my paint is what really sold them that I wasn't off base. They've been very pleasant the whole time, and want to make it right. I'll find out Monday. It had to be escalated a step higher to approve the cost. |
