Received this email from BMW just now. Looks like carplay is free if your vehicle came with carplay originally.

I just got an email from BMW...
This is to advise you of an important change to your Apple CarPlay Compatibility option as part of BMW ConnectedDrive. BMW is extending the Apple CarPlay Compatibility option for your vehicle to remain active in your vehicle for as long as the feature is technically supported. You will no longer be required to purchase a subscription to keep CarPlay active. This extension will be at no additional cost to you, and there is no action required on your part to receive the extension. To use Apple CarPlay in your vehicle with your iPhone, be sure to choose “Apple CarPlay” as the connection mode for your mobile device in the Communication settings. Note: As part of this change, we also recommend performing an update of the ConnectedDrive services in your vehicle. This can be done by following the steps below: Depending on your vehicle’s Model Year and Make, navigate to “BMW Assist”, “ConnectedDrive” or “Apps” using your iDrive controller. Under BMW Assist or ConnectedDrive: Open “Options” (physical button surrounding your iDrive controller). Click on “Update BMW Assist”. Under Apps: Click on “All Apps”. Open “Options” (physical button surrounding your iDrive controller) Click on “Update apps and services” Once the update completes, we then recommend shutting the vehicle off and allowing a few minutes before restarting the vehicle to check the connection. Should you have any questions, please contact customercare@bmwassist.com or call BMW Assist Customer Care at 1-888-333-6118. You can check the current status of Apple CarPlay and ConnectedDrive services for your vehicle by visiting www.bmwusa.com/MyBMW/ConnectedDrive. Kind Regards, BMW ConnectedDrive |

It was explained to me this way. BMW with iDrive 7 (latest 1-series, etc.,) will get Apple CarPlay from the factory. Nothing to pay and no subscription. BMW with iDrive 6 (like my 2020 build M2C) will require a one time payment to activate the CarPlay functionality, and after that, no subscription. I caved and paid. Quote:
I still think it is little odd to do it this way. It would make much more sense to make it free for all... previous owners and new owners, no matter which model of BMW. After all, to activate CarPlay in iDrive 6 is just a software (cheap) adjustment. There is no new hardware (costly) required. Last edited by ///Driver; 12-18-2019 at 01:17 AM.. |

Well it appears to be official now. Assuming this applies to the M2C.

For anyone who’s gone Full Screen, kubax86 confirmed to me via message that doing the above instructed update would NOT endanger the mod file some of us have installed from him.

I picked up a new M2 Comp this week and am absolutely enjoying thrashing it around the Welsh countryside to run it in:-)
I was a bit disappointed that CarPlay wasn't full screen. But it looks like there's a solution. I'll PM kubax86 with my details. |

Hi Matthew & Lax,
Can you confirm for me that you have not activated the CarPlay by paying for it in the past? By BMW definition, 'activate' means paying for at least one-year at some point in your car's ownership. If you have paid for activation in the past, how long ago had it expired? |

As HSW003 mentioned above, some aftermarket coding people who can enable CarPlay 'full screen' hack are able to activate it - just need to download a file (sent by an email for a small fee), copy it on a USB memory stick, plug it in to the car, restart the car and done! When I requested the removal of CarPlay from the car purchase, my dealer offered to include it at no cost to me. I'm sure I've paid for it in some way (built in cost), but it was little more palatable to think that it was free. Last edited by ///Driver; 12-22-2019 at 04:17 PM.. |
