Crank Hub Issue
Title says most, what is the general consensus on the crank hub issue? I'm assuming no fixes have been put in play..

They updated the bedplate at some point, who knows if it was related. The failure rate is very low, seems to mostly affect earlier production DCT cars that are tuned. A worry if you are going for big power maybe, none of the bolt capture mods etc. have proven to work 100%. Most reports seem to have this happen on the dyno or while almost lugging the engine (7th gear 2k RPM and a lot of throttle, etc.).
I have followed the E92 M3 forums since release and the F8x forums and the failure rate is way, way below the rod bearing issue for S65. I might think twice about tuning during the warranty period though. |

Lugging the engine on any car is dangerous, especially a turbod one. I'm pretty sure I'm going to tune it 2k miles after I get it. It looks like the realistic worse case scenario is having to re time the vanos (and replace the crank hub so it doesnt happen again).
Catastrophic damage damage could be scene of the car is continued to be driven/beat on but I dont believe the valves being bent is that common. If the issue itself is .5% of cars, I'm pretty sure only like 10% of those get the catastrophic damage. That's pretty damn rare. |

Its not a huge issue. As someone the bedplate was changed when the comp pack came out (in all S55) and it seemed to help.
IIRC its more prevalent on highly modified DCT cars. Some theories that the no lift shifts or kickdown can be factors. Last edited by dmk08; 08-17-2018 at 01:53 PM.. |

Someone with 2018 M3 with 2k miles had a spun crank hub. It's just luck of the draw.

I saw multiple people state 100% stock cars had it happen, so I really don't know.

6MT 2 of them DCT 3 of them Stock & Tuned, mostly related to kickdown or moneyshift(6MT) and bad tune.

Competition cars that are stock are running higher hp than non competition. The thread I was looking at seemed to indicate higher hp pre competition cars more likely to have issue. In later model years, street l after the comp pack suddenly more untuned cars had an issue than before, at least with the small data set in that thread. I assumed that because to had higher hp stock cars because of the comp pack.

Well, it appears from searching on the other forums that many of the tuners working on really high powered cars (600+) have had issues with the crank hub and have had to work on measures to stop it, with varying degrees of success. It certainly seems to be exacerbated by power output when you get to those levels.

As it should because the design is a carryover from the N55.

subscribed. I read a lot of the F8X forums about this. Seems most were DCT while using the kickdown. Also, a hand full of 6MT experience this, from possible money shifting? It definitely makes me more cautious of mine. Hopefully we dont hear of this happening on the M2C.

What I don't understand is how can you live without kickdown!
It's such a pain not being able to when every other bmw engine can. |
