Love how everyone is getting worked up comparing the best of the F87 generation to the regular 2 series. At least wait until the M2 is actually unveiled before writing it off, especially since the front end will look completely different on the M2, even the headlights, for this generation.

Not a fair comparison tough, stock height M-performance model vs lowered M CS.
Even the F22 M240i with its tiny wheels would look ugly next to this M2. Try putting the 1M next to the F22 then... I don't understand all these comparisons between the new M240i and the old M2, the G42 replaces the F22 not the F87. |

Thanks for sharing this. It really puts the difference into perspective and makes me appreciate just how good the F87 design is. Besides a few classic BMW designs like the e46, 2002, e39, etc, the M2/M2C/CS holds its own. It's a design that will look good forever in my opinion. That new M240i is just a flavor of the month to appeal to todays young non-enthusiast audience - like the rest of BMWs lineup. Although, Im sure they'll sell a ton of them.

At a complete loss for how BMW felt this redesign looked better than the outgoing model. Side by the side, the previous model looks better from every angle, particularly the front. Granted, this is M2 vs M240i, but the front intakes especially stand out as far superior on the outgoing model. The new ones just look lazily designed. And the headlights are just oddly shaped and spaced apart. Very disappointing.

In the photos, the new 2 series doesn't really look bigger. It sits higher, which is giving the illusion of being much larger.
If you lowered it by an inch, the two cars would look incredibly similar in size. |

The M2 CS does look amazing. But the picture below is more equal comparison between the G42 and F22

Of course, I really appreciate how they've completely destroyed the M division with the XM. We thought the new M3/M4 were hideous... My god. |

I don't get how you could compare the non M version of any newer gen car to the CS version of the last gen. I like to compare the M240i to the previous gen, not to any M2 or 1M.
Regardless I think it's a beautiful car for the non M version in its lineup.

I'm partial to the F87 CS, and biased. However, we are comparing a limited run M Series that is lowered versus a non M car.
I didn't like the new 2 series until I saw a black M240i in person, and it was in motion. It looked sharp. The tail lights are not great, but I'm sure some people like them. My favorite designs are still the E46 and E39 M cars, so I'm really living in the past. |
