Window trim whistle at 40mph

I figured I'd start a thread on this in case it is an issue for someone else down the road, or if anyone else had had this problem.

I noticed when I was driving that when I passed 40mph, I could head a very faint wind whistling sound like the window was not closed completely. It was barely audible, especially when I had the radio on, but I found myself listening for it when I drove, and of course you can't unhear it at that point.

Well, when I actually took the time to isolate the sound, all I had to do was open the passenger window and it was pretty loud actually. I had my buddy sit in the passenger seat and locate the whistling, and we determined that it was air getting through the gap in the front of the upper trim (all he had to do was block it off and the sound went away). I popped off the front of the trim and reseated it and unfortunately it is still there. I haven't had time to really work on it yet because of work but I'm so glad it is just the trim and not the windshield... probably a project for this weekend if I have time.

I'll update with what I find. Anyone else have this issue?

UPDATE: Whistle was coming from the CF mirror cap which I have PPF'd. Read comments below.

It doesn't sound like the mirror cap is your problem. If it is I have an easy solution to solve the problem.

This door jam seal might help. In the first post of the attached thread link notice that I also added a small piece of weather strip to fill in a gap in the door jam

https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1200964

I've heard of mirror air whistles but I thought that it was with after market mirrors on the OGM2.

I also have a whistle that seems to be coming from the mirrors c. 42 mph. It goes away by 45 mph or so. It must be the same thing. I do have one piece of PPF covering the entire forward side of the mirrors, but it seems that this would eliminate any whistling that may come from gaps on that leading edge.

None of this really bothers me, though.

The one piece film puts more stress on the already thin CF mirror cap right under the curve / bend of the carbon. The PPF kit eliminates much of the stress as the film doesn't have to stretch to conform to the mirror cap.

We fitted a piece of PPF Film to bridge the gap and it went away between the cap and the mirror base and it went away immediately. Small price to pay and I didn't want to have a new piece cut and hope it went away. It's fixed and unassuming enough for me. And now I have a story to tell the kids at the car shows to boot

Pretty sure mine is coming from the upper black window trim. I'll be testing this weekend with a little strategically placed masking tape.

Is your's PPF'd? Regardless add a piece of PPF film (1/4 ish wide x 4" long ish) connecting the cap and the black part under the sharpest point (did I describe that correctly?

The issue is the cap moves (pops) in and out of shape when driving. It's very thin and not well connected IMO.

Or keep as a whistle to keep the deer away? haha

My PPF installer has invited me to drop by for any required touch ups (none are required, really). If I'd like to copy your fix, I'll need to understand what you've done. Is the area you're describing the same as I've circled here?

OK, so the vertical bit closest to the window. Great, thanks! Will give this a try.

This totally worked... I have a small roll of PPF. Just cut a piece off and covered the seam and no more whistle. I guess it wasn't the trim.

Thanks MIKE!

DUDE! Congrats and you're welcome!

PS: Watch out for those deer. They won't hear "us" coming now

@ptgltw Nice find! I'm impressed that you were able to figure out this was the culprit. Nicely done!

Thanks. I wish I could take all the credit. I will say my PPF guy knows his craft and after I described what was happening, he said. Meet me in 10 min and I'll have a few pieces of film ready.

"We" figured it out in the hi fives and fist pumps were a flyin.

I'm glad to have helped and hopefully we can figure out the next guys/gals issues if and when they arise.

The great thing about this one is it's such as easy / cheap fix I wish they were all that easy.

PS: The mirror is such a beautiful design and I'm glad they went there. BMW M does know how to make a nice mirror I'll give them that.

Thanks Wah

So it seems there are two sets of whistles happening, one @75km/h and another @240km/h

When developing the car, I wonder, did they not drive it at high speed to realise it whistles?
