SA2020 incoming - expect a sale on SA2015 stock?
Hi there,
I've taken my car to the track once last year, and I'd love to do it again a few more times this year. However, last year I went to an open lapping event at a track that only required helmets for convertibles. Somewhat naive at the time, I didn't have a helmet. Seeing as I feel more invested in this now, I think it's a no-brainer to get myself a helmet regardless of whether the local track says it's required or not. As a result, I've started doing some research on helmets and the Snell rating. I've noticed Vivid Racing had a sale back in June of 2015 for Arai helmets. I assume this is to get rid of existing stock of SA2010 helmets, in preparation of rolling out the new-at-the-time SA2015 items. Do you think we'll see a similar sale again? I'm not doing anything competitive for the time being, which is why I'm ok with the previous-to-latest Snell rated helmet. https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1138318 https://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1138316 |

If you start tracking with any of the well run safety first car clubs your going to have to buy a helmet that has a current Snell rating.
If you buy a older Snell rated helmet they will fail you at the tech inspection. All the clubs give drivers a "grace period" to switch over to the latest but why have to buy another one in a just a few years?

With that being said, you have a fair point still, and maybe I should wait it out for the SA2020s to roll in. Thing is, that won't be until pretty much end of summer, so that means the 2020 season would have been a waste for guys like me who don't have helmets yet |

The clubs I've run with have always allowed current Snell rating and the previous, so I started doing HDPEs in 2016 and they always allowed Snell 2010 and 2015 rated helmets. I rented a helmet for my first event and then bought one and even in 2016 there were lots of places still selling the SA2010 rated helmets.
I don't remember seeing major discounts for the SA2010 helmets but it definitely did seem like the old stock was slow to sell. I did choose to buy the current SA2015 rating so that I'd have the longest possible life out of the helmet now. From what I've read and heard, the rating is important but use of the helmet is also key in whether it is still going to be as effective. You should never drop a helmet, drops can do non-visible damage which would make the helmet less effective, the same goes for any impacts during use. Also just sweat and UV are going to have some impact on the materials used in the helmet and could affect the fire retarding effectiveness. The rule-of-thumb I've heard is that a helmet rated within 2 generations is fine but after 5 years of use the helmet may/should be replaced too. |
