Yesterday I had the opportunity to do a 45 minutes test drive behind the wheel of the new BMW M2 (with PS4S tires).
I drove the car in the city, on the motorway and through a small and twisty mountain road. So here is a quick pros and cons: PROS: -slightly better ergonomics -more technology (if it matters to you) -better low end torque -objectively a better daily driver -I found the car more playful (more low end torque & shorter gear ratios) CONS: -significantly bigger (I didn't think it was « that big ») -I did feel the added weight especially on downhill -vague steering wheel feel -brake feel isn't as good as on the F87 CS -doesn't feel as special as the F87 CS Of course I didn't notice the 10 extra horsepowers. I never drove the new M3/4 but I somehow feels that the S58 didn’t give its full capacity (it’s a bit « flat » past 4k rpm). In summary and as expected the M2 G87 is a better all rounder (if you are doing frequent road trips or if you daily it, it is objectively the better car). In the confort mode the suspension could be almost as soft as in my M135i F40 which is amazing in a car that is more capable and with a firmer chassis. On the other hand the M2 CS F87 is a better « raw » sport car (lighter, smaller, with more precise commands and significantly more rewarding). At the end of the day I think that these 2 cars are for slightly different purposes and needs. A potential M2 G87 xDrive with a proper S58 tune could be one of the most amazing M car of this decade.

A great comparison. It will be interesting when the G87 CS comes out as you’d expect the specialness deficit, steering feel and weight will all be focused on in that variant.
Regardless of the outcomes of those more objective measures, the exterior design of the F87 CS doesn’t look likely to be bested. |

I did my best to resume the main difference but I know that It isn’t possible to do a « definitive » conclusion unless you can live with the car for some time and use it in different conditions and circumstances… Probably the CS will have to adopt the xDrive to extract the maximal performance of this chassis and of the S58. The « additional 50kgs penalty» shouldn’t be a real deal since I think that BMW will produce the M2 CSL for the « diehard fans » and « race drivers » who want a rear wheel drive weapon

I’m glad I went with M2CS, I almost bought a G87 and M3CS, however when I sat and drove the cars, is an instant turn off for me. The big screen, heavy car and just overall meh.
Give me E46, E92, or F87 those are the cars that I want. PS I daily my M2CS and it’s a great daily, it’s so much fun. I do have other cars to daily so my daily with M2CS probable won’t be as bad as other people. Basically my daily rotation of cars are Lexus GX, 4Runner, Tesla Y, LS460, S550 and M2CS (mainly if it’s just me and no wife or kids) |

I was interested in the new M2 until I drove it at Hockenheimring for a BMW driving experience track day. Sadly I had an instructor that wouldn't let us pass him which didn't allow me to put it to the test but I got a pretty good feel for it. I suspect its laptime would be a few seconds or so faster around compared to the CS but that extra weight is going to eat up tires, brakes, and fuel more quickly. If I had to guess, I'd say the G87 (on track) is only better by about 5% over the CS. For most trackday goers, where we're not good enough to consistently drive our cars on the absolute limit safely, I doubt the G87 would be noticeably better. And when the CS is equipped with the Carbon brakes, I'd say it's superior.
The G87 also felt numb compared to the CS, the fake engine sound from the speakers is quite lame, and doesn't look as good compared to the CS. I'm interested to see what they bring for the G87 CS, but I'm more than happy with the F-series. The G series is superior for the road, but I'm not getting a high-end sports car to drive on the street. |

Here's a G87 M2 with M perf parts installed. Guessing it will look almost identical to this when the new M2 CS comes out. I like the look but i don't love it.

I’m certainly not a fan of the G87 and have not been a fan of the more recent design language BMW has been introducing.
Of the newer cars I’d probably say the 8 Series is the prettiest. However, the younger generation is what BMW is after and they seem to like these new designs. When I purchased my M2cs in 2020 I said this will probably be my last “new” BMW…..nothing has changed since. |
