Amazingly, the pilot of this Marine FG-1D Corsair managed to successfully return after a late-WW2 combat mission over Japan in June of 1945. I'm guessing this Corsair never flew again.

I haven't been to the Intrepid in 25+ years, so I don't know if they have some sort of exhibit/plaque for the US Airways Flight 1549 incident that took place in the river right behind the carrier.....

Yes, we had Sully thoughts during the arrival. As far as the Intrepid? I was a little disappointed. Not a huge amount of the ship is open and they're pretty skosh on exhibits-- you can tell that they're hurting for money. It didn't measure up well when compared to the Yorktown. I did the entire Intrepid in a couple of hours-- the Yorktown took all day. I'm glad I went, but I don't know that it's worth going back. R.

I will correct the details in my post. The Kawanishi N1K2-J (Allied George) was potentially a formidable opponent in a force that by 1945 was largely comprised of very inexperienced pilots. But Genda gathered together a group of old hands and, combined with the improved qualities of the N1K2-J over the old A6M Zero, did some real damage to Allied forces. But one small and talented group didn't have a chance against overwhelming Allied numbers. Lt Frazer was a lucky man to survive that encounter with Genda's 343rd. In addition to the other difficulties facing the Japanese, poor quality aviation fuel limited the performance of their aircraft. The Japanese Army Air Force counterpart to the N1K2-J was the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate (Allied Frank) which was tested after the war using high-octane U.S. fuel and proved to outperform the P-51D Mustang!
