Yup. I was there on a layover last week and they had it inside the hangar deck and were painting various markings on it.

Amazingly, the pilot of this Marine FG-1D Corsair managed to successfully return after a late-WW2 combat mission over Japan in June of 1945. I'm guessing this Corsair never flew again.

I live next to a huge international airport in the NYC region, located next to multiple Interstate highways but a 1.5 hour drive from the city. There are a handful of scheduled passenger flights per day due to the distance from the city, but warehouses all over the place with cargo flights at all hours of the day/night. The location is perfect for cargo, and the ex-military AFB runways were long enough to land a space shuttle in an emergency. If landing slots at Heathrow (or JFK/EWR) are a problem for passenger service, moving the cargo stuff away makes sense.....

Did you have a chance to view Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger's runway from the fantail while you were there?

I haven't been to the Intrepid in 25+ years, so I don't know if they have some sort of exhibit/plaque for the US Airways Flight 1549 incident that took place in the river right behind the carrier.....

I didn't need to see Sully's runway as I'd literally flown right down the Hudson the night before at 4000' on our setup for arrival into LGA.

Yes, we had Sully thoughts during the arrival.

As far as the Intrepid? I was a little disappointed. Not a huge amount of the ship is open and they're pretty skosh on exhibits-- you can tell that they're hurting for money. It didn't measure up well when compared to the Yorktown.

I did the entire Intrepid in a couple of hours-- the Yorktown took all day.

I'm glad I went, but I don't know that it's worth going back.

I will correct the details in my post.

The Kawanishi N1K2-J (Allied George) was potentially a formidable opponent in a force that by 1945 was largely comprised of very inexperienced pilots. But Genda gathered together a group of old hands and, combined with the improved qualities of the N1K2-J over the old A6M Zero, did some real damage to Allied forces. But one small and talented group didn't have a chance against overwhelming Allied numbers. Lt Frazer was a lucky man to survive that encounter with Genda's 343rd.

In addition to the other difficulties facing the Japanese, poor quality aviation fuel limited the performance of their aircraft.

The Japanese Army Air Force counterpart to the N1K2-J was the Nakajima Ki-84 Hayate (Allied Frank) which was tested after the war using high-octane U.S. fuel and proved to outperform the P-51D Mustang! (2nd photo)
