You think Gt86 and Z cars will still be made in 10 years? I hope you're right.

Me too. There will likely also be some cool hatchbacks from Mazda, VW, and possibly others but I'm afraid the top performance models will be DCT (already happening to Hyundai and possibly the new Golf R).

Quite some time ago I filled out a long survey who's premise seemed to be 'if BMW eventually stopped offering manual transmissions, would you leave BMW'.
NOTE: every vehicle I've owned since 1981 has been a manual.

The survey I filled out was would I be upset if MT was a no cost option, meaning same price for mt and auto.

The survey I got asked about manual transmissions, and when I said I wanted one, this image of a floating middle finger appeared all over the webpage. I had to close it, thought it might be a virus.

It is a sad state of affairs where we have to explain why we didn't get a manual transmission to a group of strangers. We should be celebrating that we have a choice instead of falling into this pick a side situation that is occurring. I have been surprised a few times where strangers come up to me at cars and coffee and want them to explain why I chose a DCT instead of a manual.

Doubt those cars will be made at all, the GT86 sales are terrible and Z cars haven't been refreshed for a decade for a reason.

You are "assuming facts not in evidence," as I put on the hat of a TV lawyer giving his summation to the jury :-)

Since you address a post made "to a group of strangers," people here generally post with handles, not their own names. Locations are often not given and if given may not be accurate. I, for one, have no idea who this person is. I would take the gentleperson's post (that you quote) at face value; he or she appears to have wished to have bought a manual, but due to some physical limitation (of the poster or significant other, perhaps) bought an automatic. A number of people have posted similar thoughts in other threads I have read in this sub-board, and in the 1-Series board. These can be issues such as arthritis, prior injuries to an arm, shoulder, leg, or ankle. Even if the poster might have preferred an automatic transmission car, he or she would still probably rather have the choice rather than having the decision forced upon him or her by physical limitation.

I can see the possibility that at some point in time I might not be able to drive a manual transmission car, but I might still wish that I could.

It's like the severely disabled people you see who struggle to walk with canes and walkers and other contraptions. You or I might look at them and feel pity, but they are probably proud that they can still get around, albeit slowly, without a wheelchair or a power chair.

Exactly what I meant, if there had been a new Z car out I would have cross shopped with M2 but not even looking at a car that old.

I just do not understand this argument at all.
1 - The internal combustion engine is a thing of the past (unless Trump gets his way)
2 - The whole idea is ridiculous - Pistons going up and down to make a car's wheels go round and round. Think about that.
3 - Electric and hybrid electric engines are a way better idea if you really think about it.
4 - Gearboxes on any level are a thing of the past. Auto and manual.
So it is way better (for efficiencies sake to have an engine drive a generator that then drives the wheels electrically. Or even just a straight battery car if you are really talking acceleration and torque.
What we are talking about is obsolete experience. I would argue that we in North America are embracing the obsolete for the experience. Hence I drive a manual version of an obsolete system.
If you don't drive stick buy an electric car. IMHO!

People are writing the obituary for the ICE prematurely.

And Trump has nothing to do with anything. He's a kid in a sandbox, moving sand from one side to the other. And I say that as someone who voted for him.

Manual m2s are DEAD in Sweden. I tried to trade in my 18 manual that I ordered new, noone wanted it because buyers wants the auto.

I kinda get it, didnt like my manual at all compared to other manual cars.

Of course. I have another old car that has manual. It gives the full retro experience. A manual M2 is like connecting a VHS player to an OLED 4K TV.

Plus, the old car isn't semi-assisted and clunky like the M2 "manual" box.

Or, one could say that you are now a step closer to embracing the autonomous driving electric vehicle. Which is your prerogative, as other choices are ours, until such time as government overlords take the choices away.

I don't understand why some consumers/posters need to undermine the choices of others to justify their different opinion. Is it basic insecurity, or defensiveness, or 'majority rules', or ?

Looks like this thread just went full McNugget. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted...

Why don't we start a thread about how connecting your didgeridoo to your CD player isn't really karaoke...

So is the VHS player the N55 (gas engine) or the manual box.... both ideas have been manufactured for 100 years with basically the same idea....:-)

Just follow what is going on. Also just common sense really.
Think about the early days of the subway when they ran steam engines that "reburnt" the smoke (oh yeah). We look back on that the way the next generation will look at the gas and diesel cars.
I am a car guy but the future is clear to me.
