BMW hates us.. they were well on their way to killing the manual transmission ... but now.. they have killed the DCT..

the M2 take rate for manual would have been HIGHER than the indicated 50% if the initial round of 2016 HEA cars have been buyer configurable.

The problem with articles like this.. is that BMW now wants to act like they want to sell manuals.. when 18 months before they were saying that the 6MT is " obsolete"

Props to people like @sickfinga that have been able to track production data and force manufacturers to be honest about what has been sold, because they don't do it on the front end. .

https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1404565

I can guarantee that BMW wasn't planning to sell 50% 6MT when the M2 began production....

Props to buyers like myself who laughed at his SA when asked which transmission I wanted. Manual it is, he says.

M2 would not have been an option for me without the manual. The day bmw ditches the manual, will be the last day I consider a new car from bmw

Almost word for word, this same interview conversation has been previously published, at least once, but maybe more than once.

I waited a year for my manual M2 to be built and in that time I passed on three different pre-optioned dct M2s which my SA offered me first right of refusal on. He knew I only wanted a manual but wanted to make sure I had the option in case I had tired of waiting. I told him that an extra option here or there would be no big deal, different color maybe, but no 6MT was a deal breaker 100%

Looking back I couldn’t have made a better decision sticking to my guns and waiting it out. For me the manual in this car is such a joy to drive that it becomes an integral part of the whole experience of the car. At any speed it is just pure bliss!

M2 + 6MT = big smile every time!

Audi killed the manual in all its RS cars and the R8. My 8J TT RS is likely my last new Audi. Made the decision to get a M2 6MT easy, so that’s what I did. Took a while to find a MG 6MT without a sunroof, but well worth the effort.

At least for now, no manual means no bueno for me. Don’t care if DCT/auto is a rocket.

There are quite a few cars from Mercedes that I think I would like. Alas, with no manual transmission options, I don't even bother looking.

Manual or bust.

FYI the guy who killed manuals in Audi S and RS cars is the same guy running BMW M right now. Only a matter of time before all BMW M cars have a crappy ZF gearbox and AWD or FWD! :

I remember when I ordered my car and my sales guy said the manual would need a deposit because no one wanted it LOL. He hit me up for a M2C and said they only want to order manuals since the DCT cars sat around. At least they are learning.

Not surprising. Kay Siegler, under which the 1M was developed, seemed extremely passionate about driving and what he was creating. The current fellow; not so much.

Of course, these things don't happen by accident. Shit flows downhill.

Looks like BMW has discovered that since Mercedes and Audi and even Acura no longer offer manual transmissions, we loyalists to the manual transmissions are flocking more so to them. Yes, all the technical reasons why automatics and DCTs have advantages. I think BMW is slowly realizing that they need to focus on their roots (Ultimate DRIVING Machine) versus trying to out gadget or out luxury their competition. Like on of the posts in this thread... the day BMW stops manuals will be the day I leave BMW.

Not sure what you're talking about. The next generation BMWs will not have manuals. The ONLY car that will have a manual is the next M3/M4 and likely the next M2. Other than that the new M5 is not offered with it..the new Z4 is not. BMW don't care about manuals either. A real shame...sell outs.

I didn't this time. Due to medical reasons we had no choice but to get a DCT.

I see it as how much faster do these types of cars need to be for street use especially? They're all about the same now so we're left with the driving experience. That sways it in the manual direction everytime for an enthusiast I would think. I used to aspire to own a Ferrari, beautiful machines, but the driving experience to me would be seriously lacking without having the physical connection to the car that a manual provides. That beautiful stainless steel shift gate, etc. That is sculpture, no more. I could give a crap about any car being .2 second faster with some form of automatic transmission. Different story obvious if you're on the track, which is not important to me. Lamborghini, etc all the same now... Boring. My only complaint with my M2 would be the gummy stick which feels like I'm rowing through molasses sometimes. Wish it were more snickity.... Good word...

Audi missed out on a customer. I really liked the RS3 except for the gearbox.

I'm afraid long term they will be successful in killing the manual.

In 10 years there will only be a handful of cars:

Miata, GT86, Civic Type R, Nissan Z, Porsche 911 and 718, plus some american muscle cars.

My SA at a local store (not the store we ultimately bought our driving machine from -- see what I did there) admitted he could not drive a manual transmission.

And when we were looking at 911s prior to the announcement of the M2C, the Porsche SA admitted that he could not drive a manual.

IMO, every new driver should learn how to drive on a manual transmission.

And, at least in the US market, you have to buy it with a sunroof. No deal.

That bothered me significantly less than the lack of manual transmission. But pretty good point - saving weight and money on manual seats but forcing people to buy heavy and expensive sunroof.
