I really wanted a convertible until I realized the 200 kg. weight penalty was equivalent to driving around with 3 passengers. Then I changed my mind.

61 here, but I was only 59-1/2 when I picked up the M2. I drive pretty sanely on the road, except for that whole "not slowing down for corners" thing.
It's still not my favorite car of all time - that'd be my former '95 M3 with the turbo and Koni coil-overs installed by yours truly, but it's very close. The M2 is my daily and auto-X car. I track it once a while, but usually, if I'm gonna risk rolling a vehicle up in a ball, I'll go with my current track rat, yet another E36 M3. |

Great post.
I'm 60 and I was thinking that my M2 might be the last hurrah, but maybe not! I like the fact that the car can be driven very gently even when winding up the tach, just don't punch it unless you are ready for a rush of power. And yes it handles really well. Like Corinne, I like the Tunes, heated seats and other comfort features of the car as well. I too went with the 6 spd manual. I have been driving manual trannys since 1976 - exclusively. To me it only feels rubbery in 1st going to 2nd. Other than that I got used to it. Actually, I wish it had a 7th gear, seems to be odd to shift into 6 gear at 50 MPH, as I understand it, the dual clutch is a manual transmission shifted by a computer essentially. |

Better yet.... The M2 is my wife's. She is 66 and insisted on a stick! There is a reason we've been married over 40 years!

Have you oldies got the version with the digital radio/cd delete, but with the 45 rpm gramophone ? Then there's the nav screen delete in favour of a map rack. And who needs lane-departure steering wheel vibration when you've got Parkinsons ?

This post really caught my eye. I'm pushing 60 and this is my 2nd M2. First one was MY16, now MY17. My first drive was a BMW MY74 2002, followed by 320i, then 325is. Then with kids and dog, we went through numerous minivans and Jeep GC's.
My passion for BMW's prevailed, so when the kids grew up, I went back to X3's, 435, 330Touring, all MSports pack. The best part of all, I can now "car talk" with my younger son who's a BMW Product Genius at our local dealership. He gets to drive a new (and did I say cheap) employee lease car every year. He's now on his 2nd M240i. Essentially, he gets paid to drive and be around BMW's while I have to pay to play. How great a job is that. BTW, although I grew up driving MT, my M2 is DCT. I love the kick in the butt and chipping of tires between shifts. The turbo and DCT are such great match. Call me old if you want, but it still stirs my blood everytime I take my M2 out. Darn to BMW for getting us hooked. |
