Weird seatbelt warning chime issue
I often drive with a messenger bag or my ipad pro on the passenger seat. I've discovered that putting anything at all on the passenger seat that weighs much more than a cell phone (like my tablet) will trip the seatbelt warning chime in my M2.
Anyone else experience this? Is there a fix? Sure is annoying as all hell. |

I think the only way around it would be to plug the passenger seat belt in, that or put your stuff on the floor or on the backseat.
Only other option i guess would be to get the chime coded off. |

Or slip your iPad in the space between the seat and the thigh extender.
I've put things on my seat like pizzas (put the heater on to help it stay warmer lol) and have never had it go off

If your bag /item weighs so much and yet you choose not to put it on the *floor* rather than placing it on the seat where it likely will slide onto the floor in a collision or heavy braking episode... then you probably should just latch the passenger side seat belt into place permanently as a cheap work around. Or you could also have the car coded. |

1. If you code if off does that stop the airbag from deploying on that side? Does that effect the airbag on the driver's side.
2. If the iPad pro falls on the floor and there is no-one to hear it, does it make a sound? 3. I agree, your sensor is off....I put stuff on the passenger seat all the time (in all my cars over the years), soft brief case bag with about 20 pounds of 'stuff' in it, and it has never chimed on me. While you are at the dealer getting that looked at, pick up some winter floor mats for me, you can mail them to me. Mike

Were you charging the ipad and/or was it plugged in via USB? |

The seat weight monitor in my M2 does seem like it has a lower threshold than my X6 and 328i. I picked up fast food this weekend and sat it in the seat which set off the alarm. That hasn't happened in my other cars. My 12 pack of beer sets it off too. Ok, the beer sets off the other cars too.
Mine is a MY17. Which is yours? Curious if the sensitivity is different from the MY16. |

FUBAR sensor sounds about right
My ipad weighs a couple of pounds max, my bag fully loaded perhaps 5 pounds, so it definitely should not trigger the seatbelt warning chime. Something for the dealer to address when the 1200 mile 'checkup' rolls around. I don't really want to engage the passenger seatbelt all the time.
Thanks to all for the advice. But out of curiosity, how does one 'decode' the warning chime? It's friggin' annoying, I have a long 10 mph drive to my mailbox and don't really feel the need to belt up to get there, unbelt, grab mail, relatch the belt. PITA in fact. |

Dealers won't ever do anything to disable a safety system, this is America and we have created a litigious society so they would never take on the liability, in fact those who do code this away should remove that change before they sell the car because you never know who is going to sue you because they are too stupid to put on a seat belt.
