I've been driving manuals a few since I got my license in 1997 so I think I've had my fare share.
Now, I only took dct because it was available that day, and at first I thought I had made a massive mistake but, the more I use it like a manual - and it does take some getting used too- I'm really liking it. I can put it in full auto in heavy traffic, save the Labour of the left leg (rh drive). Performance wise, Im really starting to think that this is better than a manual for out and out driving. I have many country roads around me when I'm out driving, roads that demand multiple gear changes over and over again, and the DCT does this effortlessly time and time again. One reason I really like it is for the short shift when it's wet/damp or when I'm wanting power down early without loosing the back end, the beauty of this is no balance loss in the car...and instant drive.. It's great. But I love a manual and you do feel like your connected a bit more. If I had the choice again... For what I use this car for ;weekend blasts and the odd trip into town, DCT all the way. |

You can't go wrong either way. The DCT is fantastic, I don't have any second thoughts at all and my die hard manual transmission loving pal even loves driving it. You have a choice of two great transmissions, its up to you to decide, I would use factors like how much driving in traffic you will be doing and if you have a passion for manuals to decide. My guess is your not a manual transmission guy because a real manual transmission guy never asks anyone their opinion about what to get, they order the manual. Here the majority will be manual guys but the sales breaks down to always be a majority DCT. You should make the decision on your own though.

My last car was DCT, I'm looking forward to a manual. I realized I care less about pure speed and more about the experience.
DCT is very enjoyable, just not as involved. It is very fast, but a little too sterile an experience. Plus there were little things that would happen with how it drove that I found really artificial. And I was terrified that it would break, even while performing normally, it makes a bunch of weird noises. Dropping down 2 gears at speed was fun though. The current generation may be better. |

This again, basically you can't go wrong with either.
Why MT Purist primary choice More involving Much better resale value 10 years later (assuming you are going to keep it that long) Save yourself 3k for other mods Why DCT Best performance possible Literally 0 gear shift delay Easier to drive , especially during rush hour in major cities. Slightly better MPG I picked MT over DCT simply because I think m2 is meant to be driven with old school stick shift. It's totally subjective and personal preference, you will enjoy either. |

DCG people say get it because it is convenient and the computer is faster than you are.
6MT people will tell you to get the manual because it is the most involving way to drive a sports car and you can't wipe the smile off your face. Notice the difference? Last edited by seis-speed; 12-05-2016 at 11:14 PM.. |

Remember, there will be plenty of opportunities for a DCT/automatic in the future. Enjoy the excellent manual M2 now because as we get more hybrids (i.e. i8, NSX) and direct drive electrics (i.e. P100D) there will be fewer and fewer manual options.

I had to try the new DCT (at the time) on the e92, came from manual and SMG e46's. Fell in love with it, tried a manual e92 for a year, sold it for another DCT. I always thought I was old school but not anymore. I wouldn't hesitate to get the M2 with DCT although the manual on the new M cars are a big improvement over previous.

coming in meaning it's docking at port of NJ. Then another 7-10 days to hit dealership, then a couple more for retrofit stuff. As long as I get it before Christmas I'll be satisfied.

One important point to remember for married Americans is that 6MT will ensure your car doesn't end up with grazed wheels and paint loss on the outside edge of the driver's door....

Had a DCT M2 this summer because it was the only M2 I could get a hold of. Most cars here are DCT.
I just can't get used to the paddle shifters and ended up driving it as an auto all the time. For me it's impossible to get the right feel for it. Really tried and forced myself to use the paddles for several weeks. But no... I'll get my 6MT M2 in March. So looking forward to it! Will be a slower car but I just know I will love driving it so much more than the DCT. The only thing I will really miss are those hard shift changes on full throttle in Sport+. Like a kick in the back! Problem with this is that you find yourself driving very fast too often. |

Find a different women. My wife drives a Porsche Macan and there isn't a mark on it. She also drives a MT like a pro.

Personally I had made up my mind on MT but during a couple of months I had a Focus RS (which are all manuals btw) when waiting for the M2s postponed delivery and I realised after the first moment I got stuck in rush hour traffic I had to get the M-DCT.
Last two cars where both automatics so it was nice to go "back to basics" with the Focus RS but the MT involvement novelty soon wore off. Of course it is personal but for me, if one is planning on using the M2 as a DD, DCT is probably the better choice. |

Whoa there Batman! None of them actually said that, in fact they all lauded the DCT, although most, if not all, have said they would get manual if they had to choose. That's however a personal choice and subject a range of criteria, some subjective, others less so.
I went with manual* for several reasons:
Having said that, I've only ever driven the M2 with a DCT and it was genuinely brilliant. You can't go wrong with either; just choose what's best for your situation. *I reserve the right to change my mind |
