As someone who owns an OG M2, I guess thanks for providing the information. If that was your goal, mission accomplished and I'll accept that you are not marketing anything or trying to make money from this because I don't care. Lots of people who own or represent commercial business that sell products to BMW M2 enthusiasts post here as a marketing ploy because this is an enthusiast forum. M2 enthusiasts come here to share information with other enthusiasts who typically do not work in the automotive (maintenance, repair, or modification) industry because this is not a "people who know their way around stuff like this" forum. Specifically related to this modification, I'm sure there is a subset of M2 enthusiasts who work in the electronics industry but generally, the idea is to provide detailed information about a particular modification which not only provides knowledge but also instills confidence in other enthusiasts, who lack specific skills or education, to complete a modification. So, for example, someone could say, installing M Performance Coilovers is easy "for people who know their way around suspension components" but the idea is to provide a 'Do-It-Yourself' or step by step set of instructions which allows anyone who is prepared to 'have a go' take on the mod. I'd guess the...lets say negative responses to your posts comes from the difference between knowing there is a solution to the hard-to-see speedometer problem and having a solution to the hard-to-see speedometer problem. BR Diagnostics might know how to do it but as a somewhat commercial entity (Facebook), they are not sharing the knowledge and neither are you...which is totally fine but perhaps not providing the response you were looking for with your original post. Going by the number of post, you've been here some time so you will be aware that many people have completed mods which are much more extensive than this (check out the coding subforum!) and remember BMW provides a set of step by step instructions for every car they sell called the owners manual. Life is full of pitfalls and anyone who takes on a modification knows they only have themselves to blame if it goes wrong and if good help for this problem was readily available, there wouldn't be a problem!

The believe the solution the OP was trying to convey is to piggyback power from the lower display of the cluster, which remains on startup, to power the backlit LED, in sync with the odometer.
It could be done but it require precise soldering and physical alteration of your instrument cluster. I don't really care but just stating that at a minimum, this would void your warranty and tampering with an odometer is a US federal crime of such.. I doubt but I'm not sure if this mod would be construed as such.. https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...to-the-future/ |

Thank you for a very good post dtmurf, well thought through IMHO.
If I thought I could make a good enough step by step guide that I felt safe enough for people with varying skill levels to attempt I would have done one. Maybe someone else is good at making a detailed guide. I just don't feel good publishing a guide that I don't feel is safe enough to prevent (very) expensive mishaps. My view on what skill level one should have to be safe doing this mod might be wrong. I might very well be proven very wrong when someone makes a great step by step that most people can follow succesfully. I wouldn't bet against it. But I don't feel I can make a good enough one that I can stand by. Hence my choice of telling that it's easy for the right person. And IMHO not recommended at all without the right skills. I do understand the negativity. But this is the way I chose to do it. Last edited by MagnusT; 01-07-2019 at 05:45 PM.. |

I've had my M2 since October 2016 and really don't find the lighting an issue.
More for my amusement, I decided to buy a relatively inexpensive HUD and just use it as a digital speedometer. I've always had manuals and drive by ear, so I'm not using it as a tachometer, or for any other functions. For clarity, I picked a small self-contained OBD2/GPS model so I wouldn't need to place reflective film on the windshield. I'm using the OBD2 cable and a few black self-stick cable guides to route the wiring. |

Is there any other way to enable the gauge cluster lighting to be on when the parking lights are on? (One click right of 0/Off). No option in bimmercode?
I've had my 2017 M2 for 2 weeks and I can't believe the gauge lights aren't on this mode, and have to have headlights fully on. |

Took her out for a spin today for the first time in a long while and it was literally the first thing I noticed when I started up lol. I had actually forgotten about this mess of a cluster over the winter! So tempted to upgrade to lci cluster but been hanging on for a cheap fix/workaround to emerge. |

Every 2016/2017 (pre-LCI) M2 owner, please take a minute to report the instrument lighting issue using the following form:

This is a retrofit OEM heads-up display for the M2 that supplements the cluster.. It also supports Waze..
Might be a possible solution to #ClusterGate https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/par...&q=62302461065 |

FWIW: earlier this year a forum fellow reported that Garmin stopped the support for this head-up screen.
