That's *global* production.

What do you consider rare? A Koenigsegg? Because that's a ridiculous standard.

BMW sells *over 2M cars a year*.

There are literally more *i8s* sold than M2s.

So yeah, it's rare. I haven't seen one at all yet in NoCal.
I've read the expected run is about 10,000 units world wide, over a few years for the current M2 setup.

The ford GT350R expected total is about 2500 cars.

Audi RS7 production is under 2000.

The RS7 Performance and S8 Plus even lower numbers.

So 10000 M2's, not so Rare. There are two that I know of in my area, Binghamton, NY. Only one RS6 and One RS7. A couple GT350R's.

Maybe BMW can call it the "M2 LTD."

The gt350 is already at 10k. The r is more like the m4gts. Track toy.

Canada is apparently the biggest market or at least one of the biggest markets for M cars per capita. The majority are sold in Toronto and Vancouver with the other larger cities getting some too. In the Greater Toronto Area since last spring I've seen three M2's on the road, one ready for delivery at the dealer, and three in the parking lot of BMW Canada headquarters. That's seven cars and I have no idea if any were repeats i.e. ones I saw parked were the ones I saw on road. Five cars were blue and two grey. Mine will be mineral grey assuming I don't have a last minute change of heart and go for black.

Rough estimates if 2000 cars were produced for 2016 I'd guess 1000 made it to North America with maybe 300 to Canada. Of 300 150 probably made it to Toronto area. 150 cars is 8% of total global production and 150 cars in a city of 5.5 million is peanuts. Therefore on 10,000 cars that would be 750 cars in this city total spread over a four or five year period. I'm very comfortable calling this car rare where I live.

I.E. Not very rare.

But that is not a bad thing. Experience with repairs is the bane of "Rare" cars. At least this way, the BMW techs would have seen more than just your M2 when something needs to be fixed.

The 2 series and N55 have been out for a few years now. The M2 is just an evolution of these two entities. I'm not worried at all about maintenance issues even with power increases in my future.

I wonder if the cheapest possible version of the M2 might be the most popular. Or the least popular. Anyone venture a guess?
Probably the least. Most people get at least one option.
And most dealers that ordered cars added all options.

Apparently the E30 M3 was " mass produced " with 17,000 units across 5 years.

They weren't rare ( according to you ) but for some reason even high mileage examples are selling at well over original retail 30 years later. :

Must be because they are so common.

As other data points

There were around 5700 Z8s produced.

There were around 6300 1Ms produced.

I don't think any Bimmer fan would say either one of those two models is ubiquitous..

There were quite a few at Oktoberfest a few months ago. Many from the M Tour were there and others as well. During the event I was wondering if there were more of them in one place than anywhere else except at BMW Itself.

You're right that some cars are rare for the wrong reason – – that is, no one desired them in the first place. However, your example regarding manual transmission is the wrong one to use. Manual transmission in sports cars remains so highly desired that Porsche is returning to offer one with the 991.2 GT3. Obviously, it would be far more cost-efficient for Porsche to continue simply offering a single transmission, but the outcry after the 991.1 was offered with only an automatic transmission was so significant, Porsche decided against going that route again. And who knows how much longer BMW will offer manual transmission as an option, never mind a no-cost option. So the guys ordering their M2 with a manual maybe extra grateful they did down the road.
