Blown Turbo?

I was on the track Friday through Sunday and half-way through Sunday at one of the corners, without any warning, when I accelerated, I got what felt like 50% power. It was said that there was a puff of smoke out the back. No codes. So pitted, restarted the car and accelerated towards pit out, but still got about 50% power. So I pulled into the paddock and shut it down for about 5-10 minutes. When I started it back up, lots of smoke (kinda blue like and very stinky - pretty sure there is oil being burned). I am guessing it's the turbo because when I set up BM3 to read boost (pre-throttle), no pressure builds (there is no hissing/whooshing sound like a blew a charge pipe or any other sign of intake/turbo air leak).

To add to my confusion, I checked the oil level via iDrive (kinda ridiculous there is no dipstick!!!!) and it said add a quart. So I did. Checked the oil level again and it said add a quart. I did not add a second. No one saw any sign of me burning anything prior. If I had a dipstick, I would not be concerned about some sensor not reading because I have eyes. It seems very unlikely that I burned through two quarts of oil without me or anyone else noticing.

My car is 2.5 hours away at the track - had to find a ride home. Does anyone have any ideas other than the turbo? I am trying to figure out if I just bring it home and replace the turbo myself or if there is something more significant wrong and I should bring it to a shop (I am not interested in rebuilding the motor myself). Thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any help provided!

Good morning, really sorry to hear this - did you have any logs stored or pending (I saw you said no codes, but still) codes? Any noises?

Worst nightmare. Sorry to see this.

Mileage on the car? Had the turbo been touched at all from something like a DV or inlet upgrade?

This isn’t something you see a lot of so it’s startling.

Thanks! Thanks for the reminder!! UGH too much going on. Here is the log (I tried to look at it at the track and was having issues - haven't looked at this myself yet - that's tonight's work I hope): https://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=6522...90c6f247ea02cc

I have some codes, but I think they're old - any way to see date on them with BM3?

30k miles. Only touched the intercooler and charge pipe between the intake manifold and intercooler. Agreed - I am very surprised this has happened. I run conservative tunes - I was on a 91 octane tune running 93 octane. I was actually tempted right before this happened to go to the 93 tune. Glad I didn't or I would be blaming that change.

Details? What "blew?" I assume seal(s) surrounding the center section of the turbo shaft? Any reason? I change oil often and use Redline and LiquiMoly - nothing strange.

No - I have a Fabspeed cat. I was sharing the air related upgrades from FMIC to intake manifold.

So it looks like the car was targeting for boost and can't get it according to the log. It seems like it's the turbo at this point. Anyone else see anything? The situation occurred right in the middle of the screenshot of the log that I shared above.

Drop the downpipe and take a look. Everything else is just a guess

Sorry for not following up once I had logs - no knock, the WGDC is the same even though the turbo isn't doing anything - nothing looks out of the norm outside of the turbo not doing turbo things.

Doesn't look good, but I believe the turbo itself is interchangable from all the EWG models and is pretty cheap, the labor will be the worst part:

Check Car-part.com , a EWG can be had for less than $200

Honestly I don’t remember exactly what happened but he had similar symptoms as you (blue smoke). Pure ended up taking responsibility for the incident and warrantied it

Thanks for taking a look and for your suggestion of where to go for a replacement. At one point I thought about keeping the car within a specific class for future competition, but the more I think about it, if I do start competing it will be with other people's cars as part of an endurance team or something similar. So...all of that to say, I think if the turbo is broken I'll be upgrading it regardless of any car classification and just enjoy it as a HPDE car. A problem I already have is that there isn't much HPDE "competition" at my local track with the power/skill level I have now. If I go higher, there will be even less. The majority of the fun of driving HPDEs for me is having closer paced cars trading lead/follow around the track.

Thanks - when I go to pick up the car on Friday from the track, I'll likely be starting the disassembly shortly thereafter.

Did you check what your MAP sensor was reading?

MAP sensor appeared normal - anything in particular I should look for?

Measures the pressure in the intake manifold. I usually look at that in comparison to boost pressure target to see if I have a boost leak and go diagnosing from there.

I was using Boost Pre-Throttle for that information (not sure what sensor that comes from), but I am guessing that MAP is probably better for that information...? Probably, but I think I got the information I need to figure out my issue. Thanks for the suggestion! Boost Pre-Throttle will tell you if the CBV is working well I assume. At one point I am seeing Boost Pre-Thottle at 22.2 and MAP at 1.3, but it's a fraction of a second as I let off throttle.

Sorry to hear brother.

Almost same thing happened to me at the track. Injector failed instead. Had to leave the car for 5 days, drive back home for 4 hrs and come back to fix it. Do not drive the car, the turbo seals are done.

This is the code I couldn't clear - 140011 (Misfire: Fuel injection deactivation)

It could be that an injector is stuck open or leaking. I wouldn't turn the car on again until that's eliminated from being the case.

First step would be to check the spark plugs and in the worst case, you might even be able to smell it.

Next step would be sending an oil sample for analysis, specifically fuel dilution.

Let me know if you need help going through the tests and checking things with ISTA, I'm available most weekends.

So I had two quarts of oil left in the pan (four track days on the Redline oil and no daily driving), I have glitter in my oil (filter looked pretty good), and this:
