Probably something like this...

There is also a BMW video on the forum showing it in a 7 series and how the pocket adjusts to accommodate the phone depth and hold it snug

Edit: see post #22, http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1271981

Anyone have experience using a case like this?

Yeh I saw those but currently it's very shallow, not even half as deep on the 7 or x3

So you have to use a BMW case for wireless charging to work?

I hadn't noticed the BMW rondel on that case. My guess is it is a rebranded Morpie case or similar.

Smart though helps offset the loss of snap connector revenue for a couple of years until Apple adds wireless charging and everyone upgrades.

Edit:

Cool looks like wireless charging can be retrofitted in cars with snap in connector plates...

http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1166484

BMW case (only) is cheaper than the one I posted earlier that includes home charger...

Enables the Apple iPhones to be charged wirelessly. The case also allows charging in combination with all BMW wireless charging special equipment, accessories and Qi enabled inductive chargers.

A little late for this response, but that is only for the plug-in adapter version of hotspot. Apparently you have to pay for the built-in iDrive 5.0 hotspot which uses the built in LTE radio which doesn't allow you to use your own SIM card.

This should end the debate about iDrive 5.x and "retrofitting" AppleCar play...

Available as part of BMW ConnectedDrive®, Apple CarPlay™ seamlessly integrates your iPhone to BMW's iDrive system. Messages, calls, Apple Maps and music are shown on the center Display just as they appear on your iPhone, allowing you to stay focused on the road. Note: Requires iDrive 5.0 and BMW Navigation system.

but does not answer if July build cars have iDrive 5.x. Not sure if that was already answered? Have any of those cars landed?

All MY17 have iDrive 5.0. BMW terms the July and August install of Carplay onto iDrive 5.0 a "retrofit".

There is a video of a July build M2 showing iDrive 5.0 somewhere on this forum.

Why on earth would someone want a WiFi hotspot in their car? Everybody I know has always 3G/4G on their phone and if you want to use your laptop on then go…just use your phone as a hotspot for that device.

I have been trying to understand the advantage too?

The one advantage is it uses the car's antenna to provide better LTE reception but I had also read the phone uses the antenna too?

Some people don't pay for tethering but I guess you have to pay for the service in your car too.

My guess is the wifi chip they are now using for wifi direct connection of smartphones (to replace USB and/or provide screen mirroring) also happens to support multi connection routing. Once you have that, it's very easy to also provide a "hotspot" feature - so they just did it.

Apple CarPlay uses direct wifi for wireless version. Hopefully this means BMW is going the wireless CarPlay route.

If I am reading this correctly, we need to pay for BMW Connected Drive and the phone service has to have tethering?
