Another option is 0W-40 Motul 8100 X-Max, I'm going to give it a whirl after trying the BMW 0W-30FE stuff.

I saw some people mentioning that here so was just following up on that.
No, it would not be too thick. Your engine's operating temperature is controlled and very hot relative to ambient temperature. Whether it is 20 F or 110 F outside, your oil temp is going to be something in the range between like 190-220 F once the car warms up.

Multi-viscosity oils are labeled by what "curve" they would be on at two different temperatures, 0C and 100C. A 5W-40 is just saying that the oil behaves "like a 5" at low temps and "like a 40" at high temps.

So, like others mentioned, to find the viscosity of your 5W-40 oil at 0C, you look up the curve for a straight SAE 5 oil and find the value at 0C. To find the viscosity of your 5W-40 at 100C (nominal operating temperature), you do the same thing but you pull the graph of SAE 40 and look at the viscosity at 100C.

Now, that is a two point characterization, so there are some differences between those points comparing a 0W-40 and 5W-40 if you graphed both on a viscosity vs temperature plot. The difference is largely academic, though.

Just did my oil change last weekend and used

So far so good. It might be me but the motor does sound a tad bit quieter after the oil change.

FYI: I also bought a billet ECS oil filter housing to replace the plastic OEM one and do not recommend it. The new batch they have, the brackets inside are not cut correctly and the bypass valve is super loose you can jiggle it and it rattles and falls out when removing the filter from it.

the label says it 5 Liters, but the M2's engine oil capacity is 6.5 liters?

so will we need to buy 2 bottles?

Correct. ECS sell 7 liters in a oil change set with Mann filter and magnetic drain plug at a decent price. Just be careful when adding the last half liter. Add a little at a time and check your oil levels so as not to over fill. I didn't quite use the full .5 liters on my oil change

FWIW - I do not like not having a dipstick so I can actually sample the oil at will and see/feel it. That sucks. I'm going to change every 5K miles, and I'm going with 5W-30. What about Mobil 1? There must be some reason why nobody's talking about using Mobil 1. This being the first car I've had with turbos, I'm guessing it has something to do with that. I've always used Mobil 1 on all other of my vehicles with absolutely no issues so I'm a fan.

You could just open the oil cap and take a sample from there, it is circulated oil after all

Mobil 1 is not approved by BMW for the S55, I am used to using Mobil 1 0w40 on all my cars (2.0l turbos). Apparently the approved oils are "LL-01" Motul and Pennzoil Euro are some.

Yes, I think highly of Mobil 1 but there are so many good choices that ARE LL-01 approved that I just prefer to put the approved stuff in my car. Also, Mobil 1 should get on board. All of these other companies do the work to get approved by BMW and the are not some small boutique oil brand. I still use Pennzoil Euro Platinum because it is Shell Oil just like BMW oil made from natural gas where other oils use different bases.
