When I do a lot of highway driving, say an hour on 95 down to daytona and back, I can do 24 for the whole tank which includes a few trips to the office (18 miles away) where it's a mix of stop and go and 70-80.
It's the stop and go and very short trips that really craters the mileage. On a longer 3 hour trip to Tampa I can do 26. It sounds like the M2 is about in the middle of where you want to be.....so do the M2

I had a tuned e92 for 10 years and now an og at m2 for two years and I drive them exactly the same manner on the same road stretches.
I've noticed that with the M2 I have slightly worse long distance milage but slightly better short distance milage. I once drove the n54 900kms/560miles with a fuel consumption of 0.73 liters per 10kms which equals to about 32mpg. But then I really totally followed the speed limit and made no overpowered overtakes. With the m2 I get 0.82 liters per 10 kms doing the same thing (28.5mpg). I also only use shell v power. Now, bear in mind that this is now a scientific lab test but a real world test by me doing my best to keep a low fuel consumption. I also use the auto start/stop feature in the M2 which I suspect helps a lot with the short distance milage. (I believe that it's unreasonable to have the engine running while standing still at stoplights in rush hour traffic so I let the car handle that). My personal opinion is that having an m2 does not give anyone a free card to pollute the environment. I try to be as considerate as possible and not drive full throttle to every stop light. I also have the possibility to go by bicycle to work which I have to do every day all year long no matter the weather so that I can use my car with good conscience when I get feel for driving it. I also don't bash those who don't fully agree with my personal philosophy because I feel for what I feel for and not everyone is the same. Only thing that I can't fully understand is people saying that they don't want to use auto start/stop because it feels weird or something...I can't think of anything more egoistic (car wise) than polluting the air while standing still because it is totally unnecessary and that it "feels weird/strange" is not an excuse in my opinion. Peace out! |

I wish I could drive one for 1-2 weeks to get a feel for it.
Has anyone ever bought from one of those joe-blow or online-only dealers? The prices look good and figured if the carfax was clean & has dealer maintained records and have a PPI done, it should be ok, right? |

I watched a video of a guy who did an aggressive tune, turned off all of the nannies so no rev match and did a money shift resulting in a spun crank hub. Short of that kind of effort it is highly unlikely that you will have an issue.
I have 40k and over 24 track days on mine and it has been rock solid. |

I get 25 no problem, combo city & highway driving 30 miles at a time. No doubt I'd get better on long-distance freeway drives. If I'm aggressive on the throttle, 22-23.
Car is a gem - easiest money I've ever spent on a car. Not only will you see very few issues with the N55 on this forum, but check the forums for other models that have used the N55, going back 10 years. Other than the fuel pump, which BMW corrected very early, this motor has caused very few people very few headaches across 10 years of production across many different BMW models. I wanted something special but without sacrificing reliability, so I did the homework and tons of reading across every forum you can think of. The N55 is a Ward's Best Engines winner 3 years in a row, and the M2 got the best iteration of it. I'd do it all over again without hesitation. |

I suspect these guys getting high-20s in MPG are the exception. I have 36-50mi round-trip commute, probably 75% highway (in terms of mileage). I have a bit of a lead foot, 6MT and have the car in Sport+ 24/7. I avg 22-23mpg overall.
I could probably get it up to 25mpg or so based on my road/traffic conditions but man that would be no fun. This is my DD. I wanted a fun, engaging car. Holding back on the throttle every day to save whatever that comes to ($100-200/mo?) is totally not worth it for me. IMO if these numbers concern you, I would get a turbo 4cyl or something. Golf GTI/GLI? Maybe a little Miata? |

On the motorway could do high 30s no problem. I was pleased with an average 30 over the time I had the car.

I just want to throw in for anyone in Arizona, California, or Nevada the fuel is so terrible you will get worse gas milage than gas in other states or anywhere in Europe.

Weird that everyone's MPG claims are all over the map. I think I am leaning towards the DCT now, for the sake of better mpg and easier to deal with stop and go traffic every day.

Could be true. I was gonna chime in that the best highway mileage I get on my DCT is about 25-26 mpg, city is 21-22. Was wondering where these people getting high 20's were coming from.

Are spun crank hubs unheard of on pre-2020 M2's? I am now leaning towards a 2018 to get the LCi updates but want to avoid having to get the crank hub replaced.

I did the research, not just on this M2 forum but across multiple forums for a variety of models that used the N55 since this engine's introduction. I never found one single spun crank hub, on this model or any model. That's exactly zero, and I did my homework.
