Mine is a manual, I average around 22 MPG (or less) but I think for purely highway travels I'm up in the upper 20s.

For a DD, it would be bit loud for me, but I'm old and intolerant.
Yes, its marginaly better. But the M240 gets even better with the ZF8.

I haven't calculated manually, but gotten about 400 miles out of 2 tanks of gas Fill about 11 gallons each time), so I'm averaging 18 mpg around town with some spirited driving as I enjoy my new car. Still only have about 425 miles on her. I'm guessing on highway driving I'll get much better, or when I drive in Efficiency mode. But I doubt I'll get better...the M2 craves to be driven hard (not abused), and thats when its most fun (and inefficient).

Doing the math without the details is impossible. Somehow I doubt it's a gain, but again, without the numbers it will be impossible to prove or disprove. Either way, if it's about money, then you have to consider everything, including the purchase price of your electric car and all related costs as well (insurance is typically a big one) including taxes, tags, etc...

I have a friend who tried to tell me that he saved money by buying his Model 3 because he pays less for electricity than he does for gasoline. But then I pointed out the fact that his cash outlay for the Tesla will never even allow him to break even, much less gain, unless he keeps the car for more than 15 years. At that point, he might be able to save some money. The calculation considered all factors and used average/projected costs of fuel for both vehicles as just one of the factors.

Most people just don't look at the big picture and when they finally do, they realize that they probably aren't saving money with an electric car. Yes, the fuel cost is cheaper, usually by 1/2 to 1/3 for electricity vs gasoline, but fuel is just one consideration.

Is the crank hub an issue for this motor? Any key things to immediately check/replace if I buy this?

And the primary thing holding me back from buying an M2 is the fuel economy. For those that daily their M2 and do 75-100 highway miles a day, what is your fuel economy like? Currently get 31 or so and I realize I will not get that in the M2, but trying to get a realistic estimate. I'm hoping to avoid filling the tank every other day.
Why would you buy an M2 and worry about gas mileage

Yes, if you want to drive the M2 like a grandma, then its not for you to begin with. Cant worry about economy on this type of car. Only thing sucks is that the tank is small so filling up every 200 miles is not fun. I do long trips once in a while and will need to make more fuel stops along the way.

Well, not just fuel but no oil changes, transmission service, brake pads may last longer because of regenerative braking, and of course, what price can you put on being an arrogant tree hugger? I jest, because I love tree huggers, and I have been known to once or twice consider the environment.

I gave long hard thought to the Model S (it does drive nicely and the torque is just fabulous) but in the end, I couldn't make it work. Range anxiety, out of pocket cost, quality issues with Tesla, value for money, etc.

Yeah, wait 'til you're my age, and you'll need those extra fuel stops for pee breaks.

Cliche response.
  1. I drive a lot of miles to/from work, fuel adds up.
  2. I want a fun car
  3. I want a fast car
  4. I don't want 2 cars
  5. I am able to efficiently in the morning while I sip coffee and on the way home while in traffic

I get about 225-240 miles per tank. I drive pretty lazily.

You might do better if it’s a lot of freeway driving, but ultimately, as somebody else said, you will fill the tank regularly because it is so small.

Yeah, thinking the M2 may not be the car, might instead consider the M3, or M240.

If you're worried about the the crankhub, don't get the M3.

If you're getting a 240 over and M2 because of gas mileage, you're nuts.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet, but you can go for a DCT if you are concerned about fuel econ. It has an extra gear that puts you in a lower rpm range during highway speeds. It's 1000+rpm lower depending on speed.

I did a 5mi highway run in my Stg2 tuned DCT today in comfort mode, 75-80mph, and got 26mpg. I never drive on the highway so that's the only personal input I can give for mpg.

Assuming you hold onto the car for long enough for it to pay for itself, doesn't the money you save go out the window in resale value as the battery degrades or needs replacement?

Forgot about the crankhub with the M3. Honestly, I have no idea what I am going to do, but with my BRZ approaching 200k miles, I want to find something soon. There's nothing nice in the japanese market besides the GTR which I don't have the cash for.

Audi S3? lol

1. Has to be at least in the high 20's MPG
2. Has to be relatively fast / fun
3. 6MT is a plus
4. Can't be a Hyundai. I don't like USA domestics.
5. Affordable, budget is 50k max.

M2 fits the bill for the most part, but is a stretch for bullet 1.

@DarthFader, are you serious about the 29mpg? Can anyone else weigh in on their highway MPG? I can live with 29, but not 22. It sounds like a small difference but driving 500 miles a week for work, it adds up.
I get 30-31 highway mpg in my manual trans M2 at highway speeds of 70-75 or so. As long as I don't stomp on the throttle I've been truly impressed with the fuel mileage. My long term (30 month, 40k miles) fuel mileage is 25 mpg INCLUDING 30 track days plus 5 days of lake ice racing. Fuel mileage on track days is 7-8 mph. My daily commute is 2/3 highway and 1/3 secondary roads.

I drive daily my car to work and it’s about 67 miles round trip and pump about every 4 days. My car is a manual transmission so it’s not as efficient when driving 75-80mphs because the rpm is at about 3k at those speeds.

I wish the tank was a little bigger so that I don’t have to pump that often, but I honestly don’t mind it.

You should get the M2 it’s definitely worth it because Smiles per gallons > Miles per gallon

I did a Miami to Chicago run and wanted to see how much mpg I coul get, and have the fewest possible stops. This was a 1400 mile distance.

Managed to get 28 mpg mostly cruising 75-85.

Stop 1 was in Gainesville,, FL (~300 mi)
Stop 2 was near Macon, GA (~ 250 mi)
Stop 3 was in Nashville, TN (~ 330 mi)
Stop 4 was somewhere near Louisville, KY (~ 175)

At that point I had enough gas to get to Chicago, (~ 300 mi more) would have made it but had to make one more stop just because I was tired as hell.

About 300-333 miles between each stop! I didn't know my car could do more than 200 miles on a tank

And not to bash tree huggers, again, but I wonder how many people that think that they are saving the world by buying an electric car or a hybrid give any thought to the issue of recycling or disposing of those incredibly toxic batteries?

Anyone who doesn't think that lithium batteries are not toxic have never punctured or otherwise injured their phone's battery. Gads, talk about poison gas!

And those Tesla batteries, I kid you not, are really nothing more than a whole bunch of AA batteries ganged together. Imagine taking one of those cells apart to find 2500 little batteries inside, each of which has to be carefully transported and disassembled and recycled.

Mining and refining of rare earth materials, manufacturing the cells, manufacturing the pack, paying for the electricity to charge the battery, etc. Fairly certain I read that manufacturing the batteries for EV's is comparable to the carbon emissions of an ICE car throughout it's entire life, and is completely offset when the battery needs to be replaced.

You must be the world record holder for fuel economy, considering that these cars get around 20-21 mpg combined highway and around town driving. Maintaining 30-31 on the highway would take quite a long tailwind I think....lol
