Modified KW V3 Rears

My mechanic was saying the rears are too hard to height adjust when he installed them on my car. I don't understand how they are hard to adjust (I thought you can stick the spanner in there to twist the perches, but I guess not) he was saying you have to remove some stuff to access it, or that the perch spins on itself preventing adjustment. I don't know. I don't get it. He said he called KW and they said that's how they are supposed to work.

Anyway, he ended up cutting a slot in the bottom of the perch so you can adjust them with a long screwdriver through the control arm. Here are some pics if anyone is interested.

They appear to be missing the helper spring and intermediate spring perch. So...

I actually had this issue as well where the height adjusting collar would just rotate the whole threaded assmebly instead of winding up or down, it’s pretty common.

Hmm, didn't notice that. I'll ask my mechanic. I know they came in the box cause I have pictures of them.

Either way, the rear springs would still have the same issue and need a mod like this.

No, that's the whole point - they wouldn't. With the weight off the wheels, the load exerted by the helper spring is minimal, making adjustment much, much easier.

To be clear though, I think your mechanic is incompetent.

The helper springs are in there. You can't see them cause the control arm is dished, but I stuck my camera up in there and they are there.

What makes you think he's incompetent? Other people have the same adjustment issue with the KW's.

Well:

1. His approach to adjusting your springs apparently requires an angle grinder, rather than just the c-spanner provided by KW.

2. The adjuster should be all the way up against the top cap as a starting point - not just about to unwind off the bottom.

3. The helper springs and associated hardware should be at the top.

HTH.

1. The spanner is not enough to adjust the height, as previously discussed by myself and others.

2. Not sure what you're talking about, but the collar in the rear is set about half of it's length. It's not barely hanging on. The car is also corner balanced, which I was there for and have pictures of the scales to see it's all correct.

3. I'm not sure it matters where they are located, but when you order the KW's, the helper springs come at the bottom out of the box. They are also at the bottom in all KW pictures, videos, as well as shown at the bottom in the installation instructions.

You were making questionable remarks on my sway bar issue as well. Are you sure you know anything about suspension?

Well, sorry if the sway bar mounting comments were in any way offensive.

In the meantime, best of luck sorting the spring problems.

Not offensive, just ignorant. Which is fine, we can't all know everything about everything.

It's always a pleasure to provide advice on forums such as this where advice is sought.

Once again, best of luck in resolving your issue.

I don't recall asking for advice or having an issue here haha. I posted a solution to a known issue. This convo is getting so out of hand and I don't understand why or really want anything to do with it.

Okay, so looking once more at the angle grinder cuts in your brand new KW V3s: You were asking for confirmation that everyone else had done the same, or?

Whatever your issue, I sincerely hope you are able to resolve it.

I don't see where I asked anyone for confirmation...

I'm surprised no one else mentioned the rear adjustment issue. I read every single comment and post in the f87 section before deciding to buy them.

The swaybar issue I had, I can see why no one talked about it though... I don't think many people are running the Dinan/KW combo like I am.

Glad I could be the guinea pig to help future people though. (trying to secure my place in heaven)

You were apparently concerned that they should be so hard to adjust?

They shouldn't be.

I wasn't, nor do I see anything I wrote that could be mistaken for that. If you'd like to point it out specifically, I might understand what you mean better.

They shouldn't be, but they are.

Right, sometimes you will need more than just the spanner. The base can spin in the frame if not designed properly. We like to spay dry lube on the threads prior to any installation to help us make adjustments later. We also like to use Swift thrust sheets on both the top and bottom side of the springs for the same reason.

The helper can be at the top or bottom, it doesn't really matter. We have our quick spring change kit and have always installed and recommended the helpers installed at the bottom, on the control arm side. That way it's easier to overcome the helper to get the main spring out for a quick change.
