I understand the concept of an aftermarket tune; the idea is to reverse-engineer the factory mapping by identifying locations of various parameters and altering it to maximize the power output. However, what worries me is a typical ECU sometimes contains over 50 difference settings controlling the engine's load based on various conditions.
Tuners modifying the maps doesn't take into account every program running on the engine's computer, including communication with the transmission for traction control / DSC and possibly idle speed, if they are not specifying a tune based on the specific tranny. Instead, they just blindly copy what was there from the factory, then change the 'maps' - the data tables describing fuel quantity and ignition+cam advance for throttle, airflow, air temperature, engine temperature, boost, etc inputs but not the transmission's micro-controller coding. So the power load is increased but the transmission is forced to play catch-up. Or in the case of a manual; an off-key power output, contrary to how it's was originally designed to operate. Which I suspect is responsible for the sometimes wonky traction issue. But credit to Bm3 for at least giving the option of boost-by-gear control to partially offset this phenomenon. The only way around this is to re-write a factory mapping from scratch, which only the manufacture has the resources and equipment to accomplish such a specific task. For this reason, some BMW automatics transmission/DCT are tuned stock with slightly more (or less) power than its manual counterpart, since each map is transmission-based from the factory. https://m.carsdirect.com/car-mainten...-transmissions |

Crank figures of course...
On previous BMs (M3 / M6 / M5) the sport displays never changed with engine power increases / remaps as they are just a fudge based on standard output. My M6GC was 725bhp, but still only went to 565 on the sport display. OP - are you saying your sport displays read higher now its mapped? |

It's the regular CS map. Yes, I feel a lot more power throughout actually. It even sounds better too. I can hear the turbo and "bov" plus there's a little more growl to her. Once I get bored/used to the CS, then I may try the CS+...then to Stage 1 |

I am getting ready to purchase bm3, got few questions. USA car.
When I take my car for regular service (non-warranty items) should I lock the ecu and code everything back to stock? Is it okay to mention I have a tune and tell them don't update the software without my consent? |

Whether you tell them or not depends on your relationship with the guys there. It's not their call if you get warranty work or not on i.e. spun crank hub - BMW NA is who decides that after they connect your car and I imagine find that it's been tampered with. I've heard of people getting warranty work anyway and others not. I have no clue why there is a discrepancy. Maybe if they see a Money shift in the data they won't help, or perhaps it's when there is physical damage vs limp mode that has them dig deeper into tampering etc. |

2. I would not mention you have a tune, but on a side note... I brought mine in for the 1200 mile service a few weeks ago and they did not update to the new revision (istep). I have a sneaking suspicion that the update may only be for OPF cars (non-US), but I could be wrong. |
