The lights in the foot wells are so weak that you can barely see they're lit even if it's pitch black outside and I've turned the level of them to full in iDrive. White or red colored are equally weak. Is it supposed to be like that or is there something wrong with my car's lights?

I think that's the way they are. My Golf R definitely had better illumination in the foot wells as does any Ford that has MyColor.

Hitherto, I had not realised how important well-lit footwells are to the driving experience...

Like carbon fiber grills, M-style mirrors and such things also are so important to that?

Honestly, why have they bothered mounting lights there when it's just about completely invisible? I thought mine were broken...

Mine are weak as well... You can code them to be separate from the instrument lighting intensity in BimmerCode. They are still weak though.
